The unidsputed queen of Ibiza kicks off a string of absolute floorfillers

Welcome to DMCWORLD Sarah. Another mad summer for you, with an amazing Buzz Chart tune entry thanks to your incredible ‘Balla Concetta’ on Azuli…talk us through this tune…

“Well it all started when the producer of my radio show met with the original artist Lucia Cassini in Naples. He got his hands on a copy of her album and found the track ‘Balla Concetta’. The original was a massive disco hit in Italy in 1982. He sent it to me and we both agreed it was super catchy as the vocal stuck in our heads for days!. We organised for Lucia to fly to Ibiza and we re recorded her vocal. She was great and super keen to revive her numero 1 hit! I knew exactly what would work with that vocal and how it should sit in the track and the new version was made in 1 day! It was a nice experience making the track because there was a group of us all working together doing our own part to make this song happen…so prpos to Andrea Fiamberti, Christian Velardi and of course the lovely Lucia Cassini…”

Tell us about Summer 2012 in Ibiza and some of your best DJ sets…?

“I have led a different life this summer and spent a lot of time indoors…I am working on a few projects plus I have a heap of follow ups for ‘Balla Concetta’ that I want to complete. I do get out of the batcave however when I play and as always I am at Pacha enjoying the new DJ box they have installed for this season…we have been getting packed super early, and have even had to open the club 1 hour early on some nights! I love playing the main room of Pacha..nothing beats it…and the house that is coming out this year fills that space perfectly!”

Outside of Pacha, where else have you been checking out on the island club wise?

“Like I said, I have been a bit of a homebody this summer but I really like the Solomun night at Sankeys…I think Sankeys is a refreshing clubbing alternative to the super clubs and Diynamic has been on a whole my fave label this summer. Also Enter @ Space with Richie Hawtin and his guests takes clubbing to another level and the music rocks too!”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

Melohman and Javi Bora- Jazz Extender (Metodhi Hristiv and Pavel Petrov mix)
Paul C and Paolo Martini- Camouflage
Sante- Homegirl (Rampa mix)
Michel Cleis- Mir a Nero
Ramon Tapia and Riva Starr- Freedom
Fabier- Milf (Stefano Kosa mix)
Demarkus Lewis- Bump and Grind
Soydan- That’s Why
Black Light Smoke- Lovework (DJ T mix)

Tell us about your first ever night in Ibiza with Charlie Chester and Derek Dahlarge…

“Oh wow……hahahaha……yeah well there was wigs, a bit too much alcohol…a funny little afterhours…some crafty shenanigans and I remember dropping Thriller from the get go…and then a lot of BLURRRRRR….where is Mr Dahlarge? Comeback time!”

Do you think Ibiza is still important in breaking a tune?

“Yeah definitely. Ibiza is still the number one tune breaking territory. People hear songs in Ibiza and take them and their memories home with them. The sounds start here at the epicenter of dance music and they pulse out to the world…can you picture that?…”

Where are your favourite restaurants in Ibiza at the moment?

“My local is B-For Sushi, it is just up the road and is great for a late night healthy snack. Fish Shack as always. The terrace at Es Caliu and the Chuleton de Buey is to die for. I aslo recently ate down at Nassau Beach Club and really enjoyed their fine cuisine!”

Have you noticed any great new DJs in Ibiza this summer?

“The big one on everyones lips is Danny Avila….the wonder boy that is called the Justin Bieber of DJ’s!! He is only 16 and has been playing with Tietso in Pacha, good on him!! Not a new DJ but a great breakaway DJ success story has been Marco Carola and his night Music On @ Amnesia. His sound is killing it this summer everyone is vibing about it.”

You first developed a love of music by sitting on your grandmother’s floor playing records at her infamous parties at the age of five. Australians in general are known for their poor taste in music (!!), what were the early records you were enjoying growing up?

“Haha is that right!? Well I grew up on a concoction of Joe Dolci’s ‘Shadaap Ya Face’, Willie Nelson’s ‘On the Road Again’, Hank Williams’ ‘Junior Born To Boogie’, Boy George’s ‘Karma Chameleon’ and AC/DC’s ‘Its A Long Way To The Top’…

Back in the day you practised for 8 hours a day for months to perfect your mixing and before you knew it you were DJing at Sydney clubs such as Soho, Kink and Home. Sydney was booming then and thankfully it is now on the up again – why did the city dip for a while?”

“Because the people lost their interest for house music and funk. There was a massive funk scene when I started going out and that funk vibe carried across into the clubs….once it started going to hard and electro the scene lost its vibe…also there was a bit of gang violence in the clubs for a while with gang members having shoot outs and getting all nasty and jealous over who had the most popular clubs. That definitely lost the vibe!! But house is making a come back so I have heard, so I am looking forward to returning this year to test it out!”

What has been your anthem of the summer?

“‘Balla Concetta’ of course haha! No lie but sometimes it actually gets the best response on the dance floor when I’m dropping a house set!”

What are tour thoughts on Croatia creeping up on Ibiza as a serious contender for party capital of the summer world, the government have really pushed the clubbing and festival tourist angle there this year?

“Hmmm nothing will ever be Ibiza…it might be another party place but no where will ever have the ‘magic’ of Ibiza….that is impossible!”

Away from Ibiza, where else have some of the big club sets for you this year?

“Le Baoli in Cannes, Cape Town at The Grand Beach, the Pacha Festival in Amsterdam was massive, Rock in Rio Madrid is always rocking and the brand new ElectroZiles Festival in Sion was an absolute pleasure to play at.”

What is coming up next from you studio wise?

“I have three tracks that I am happy with right now so it is just about getting them out…so hopefully b4 chrissy…I also have 2 tracks for release with a new outift called ‘United 5’. 5 artists collaborating with their own sounds to create a unique fresh house vibe. Lets hope the people like it as much as I do!!”

And finally, do you think it was written in the stars that one day you would be a resident at Pacha. After all, your parents used to grow cherries for a living in Adelaide…

“Looks like it!! Funny little fact right? I am heading down to Adelaide to see my cherry growing family when I head back to Oz…I am going to give them a massive high five!”
