Simon Patterson

One of the hottest properties in dance music brings us his ‘Here & Now’ dancefloor monster

Hey Simon welcome to DMCWORLD. Another wonderful tune of yours smashing The Buzz Chart to smithereens at the moment, ‘Here & Now’ featuring the vocals of Sarah Howells, talk us through the tune…

“Sarah and I have been talking about doing a tune together for a long time.  There were many emails back and forth to get the right vocals and backing track.  It took a lot of time but the end product I hope was worth it.”

The video features two best friends climbing the fence at a festival, you must have done that sort of thing back in the day in Northern Irlenad?

“The only fences I was scaling back in Northern Ireland were the ones of my boarding school! Pretty sure no one has ever enjoyed living at school! J”

Music was always around you growing up. Your grandfather discovered Van Morrison and helped break The Rolling Stones…what’s the story there?

“My grandfather was a great man and very on ball in the music scene as you can tell.  I hope a little of that has rubbed off on me.”

Do you think football would have been a serious career option for you if you hadn’t been in that car crash when you were 16 – were you that good?

“It’s difficult to tell what my career may have been like but I was already playing for Leeds Utd then and things were looking promising until the car crash.”

Your first love was rock music, bands like Metallica, Machine Head and Rage Against The Machine. So how did the progression to dance music happen, was there one particular song that did it for you?

“Yeah, Red Light District – Did You Hear Me?  Judge Jules and that track opened my eyes to dance music.”

You were part of the Serious team for years. Ah, the loveable rogues Sam and Charlie. What was the maddest night you ever had out with those two alchies?

“Every night I have out with Charlie is mad. Latest trip having been in South Africa!”

What has been the festival highlight for you this year?

“Nocturnal Wonderland.  Insomniac always impress!”

San Antonio has been quieter than normal this year, Judgement Sunday at Eden is one of the few exceptions though – how has the white isle been for you this season?

“Always fun and nice to see an ever growing and changing crowd over there.”

What has been your summer anthem?

“I don’t tend to play many vocal tracks so I guess it would be ‘Here & Now’ as the crowd can sing along to it.”

What are the big tunes you are currently spinning…?

“It’s always changing but the likes Neelix and Astrix always tend to be in there.”

Has your art of Muay Thai boxing ever come in useful on a night out?

“No, I’m a lover not a fighter Dan.”

What is the best live gig you have ever been to?

“PVD in Knebworth.”

Will you be at ADE in October?

“Unfortunately not, I’ll be in Buenos Aires at the time for BAT 5.”

Who are the producers from around the world you are giving high fives to at the moment?

“Again, Neelix and Astrix as well as Interactive Noise.”

Who is the brightest new star in the world of trance?

“There’s so many new producers coming through in many areas but a guy I like at the mo is Blazer.”

You have worked with Dave Lambert at AM:PM, Nick Halkes at Incentive Records and A&R’d for Seb Fontaine and Judge Jules. Who did you learn the most from?

“All of them in different ways but Nick Halkes without a doubt as he is a perfectionist and great at what he does.”

You travel the world every weekend appearing at packed clubs everywhere. Why do you think the UK’s club scene is so poor at the moment?

“The festivals have taken over really so there’s perhaps not enough room for the smaller nights to come through and compete.”

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

“Loads of new stuff, a few vocal tracks and some new experimental bits.”
