DMC Kicks Back…
Killa Kela – A Proper Master Of Ceremonies…

You’re the world’s biggest human beatbox superstar. Most kids when they’re growing up want to drive trains or be a nurse. Why did the mic  and steppin’ up in front of a crowd motivate your world all those years ago?

“I guess when you’re given that kind of opportunity, you roll with it. To be fair, I never grew up wanting to be a beatboxer. I’m fortunate beyond belief – I guess you work your talents though.. But the trick is to be patient and build on a career. That’s just what has happened.”

How did DJ Vadim help things along?

“He found me. Well, I found him ! He took me on my first tour at a time when his profile internationally had just kicked off. So our work together in Europe became a bit of a ‘hip hop association’ of that time. He’s like a brother to me. He taught me work ethics – ethics I still hold onto today.

You’ve travelled the world, knocked the shit out of some amazing venues – when you are sitting in your rocking chair in your later years, what clubs will stand out and still make your hair stand up on end?

“The ones where I’ve gone beyond what I thought were my limitations in a show – physically and musically. There’s too many career moments – ‘Rockcity Skate Festival Vancouver 2004, warming up for Jay Z at Earls Court, the DMC 1999 World Finals New York, the Wanchei Convention Centre to 30,000 clubbers in Hong Kong, the MTV Music awards with Snoop… crazy days. It’s been dope dope dope so far.

Patsy Kensit – did the film Lethal Weapon 2 have anything to do with that relationship then?

“When you say Lethal Weapon 2, I take it you’re referring to her literally ?”

You’ve appeared on stage with Pharrell, Justin Timberlake, the Super Furry Animals, Prince, De La Soul and Plan B. Who was the coolest of the lot?

“They’re all great man. Its inspiring to work with such great people. Looking at the list- it never really sinks in who I’ve been lucky enough to work with and learn so much through. It shapes you as an artist and a performer.”

Best DMC on stage/backstage moment?

“Dragging Daniel Beddingfield on stage with me. Now that was hillarious!

What’s up and coming release-wise for the Killa Kela music machine?

“New KK album which is pretty much there. Sounds fucking ridiculous. The latest single with Alan Braxe ‘Nightwatcher’, the new Wiley single ‘Summertime’ featuring myself and Kenna, just recorded the Knice/MTV Knife amnesty track, which sounds great,  lots more showcases, videos and Spitkingdom. See you at the DMC’s man!”
