DMC UK DJ Championships 2009
DMC Southampton Heat 2009

DMC World Champion Cutmaster Swift Tells All…

There’s something special about the South of England. Oh sure there’s all the beaches and stuff – but DMC weren’t in town for silly hats and hiring deckchairs. This was our first time in sunny Southampton – I was excited because I knew that this was the first town in the UK to ever sample the taste of a Fish Finger. And boys, well…It was going to be a new challenge for DMC. And a good one. We put the event on at The Orange Rooms  which is a very cool vibe bar. The Orange Rooms is renowned for their live artist nights and always rammed. The eliminations saw eight competitors battling it out for their qualifying positions including the second attempt from the 2006 UK champion Asian Hawk –  most notable stamping his authority throughout his three minutes performance, which in my mind would leave second  and  third place open between Disect, TGK & Sickid.  However, the extra three minutes can have a habit of turning predictions into a lucky dip like the Lotto –  read on as I reveal nights results…

Third Place

Was a joint between Sickid & TGK – their styles were quite different, but equally had magic moments. For Sickid, in my opinion, his Tone-Loc ‘Wild Thing’ juggle was a great piece of entertainment throughout, there was familiarity as well as good old head nodding funky arrangements, TGK on the other hand was more technical dropping some nice juggles and scratches.

Second Place

Disect demonstrated a very busy and intense set from rapid chasing arrangements, some energetic beat chops and very rapid scratches throughout his routine.

First Place

Was deservedly given to Asian Hawk who was placed second in the Manchester heat – his set just had a pace and musically was untouchable as well had the familiar chasing beat arrangement. He also pulled off funky technical multi-flare scratches, beat chops and the most brave start stop button juggles – which without doubt also proved his worthiness to be winner on the night.

Finally, Southampton – leave the music PAs to DMC – we bring down the boys such as Inja and Illaman who can walk on water – they are funny on water, Illaman is the fastest MC I have ever witnessed, freestyle to die for, so entertaining, a unique show. Shiftee and Switch certainly stepped up their game in the battle showcase ! DMC just knows this game inside out and we just know how to wipe out the little dudes. Don’t miss the last two heats, Birmingham on Saturday 6th June with Heducation/Scratch @ Rainbow, London heat on Saturday 20th June with Urban Nerds @ 93 Feet East and then the big one, the UK Final, Thursday 9th July @ 02 Academy Islington.
