Ashford & Simpson – Send It: Expanded Edition – (Big Break Records)

Next up in this glorious series of reissues from Ashford &Simpson comes their 1977 album, ‘Send It’. And once again the release comes adorned with freshly remastered versions accompanied by Christian John Wikane’s superlative sleeve notes, which include a revealing interview with Valerie Simpson no less. Yet again the album is jam-packed with soulfully inspired Disco goodness, just as it emotive ballads plus notably funkier jams such as their irresistible ‘Don’t Cost You Nothing’. Also contained is one of my all-time favourite instrumentals in, ‘Bourgie Bourgie’ with its soaring strings and rousing piano hits sounding the perfect accompaniment to what was to become a big hit for Gladys Knight & The Pips. Joe Claussell’s Classic Mix plus the exhilarating 12” Disco version of ‘Don’t Cost You Nothing’ are also included, which in turn adds up to another invaluable addition to Disco’s rich history and subsequent influence on today – while shinning a comparative spotlight on contemporary song writing.
