For a duo that’s only been going for three years, Leeds boys Jamie Rial and Richard Burkinshaw have uncorked a debut album which sounds like they’ve been at it since back in the day, such is the skill, invention and innate knowledge of house music history which peppers its top level sonic plateaux. The bedrock is their own strain of springily propulsive electronic house but anything from Isaac Hayes and dub reggae to classic Detroit and early 90s NY forms weave in with subtle impact. Tracks like the acrobatic ‘Shanghai’ display a wicked way with a laptop but ‘Sun Through The Ceiling’ is a NY jazz-house riot and the shock brass-blast re-entry on ‘Schizophonic’ with its hiphop-style sample bites will have you on the edge of your reinforced strides. Their singles have already sold buckets while they’re massive on the live circuit but such a strong debut album can only polevault them towards Daft Punk status and beyond.
