Mickey Moonlight – ‘Mickey Moonlight And The Time Axis Manipulation Corporation’ – (Ed Banger / Because)

mickeymoonlightYou’ll have guessed from the title that this is a pretty far out piece of work. The identity of Mickey Moonlight remains something of a mystery, but he helped produce the first Zongamin album, and has added to the canons of Franz Ferdinand, Justice and Tame Impala with some pretty left of centre remixes. This album harks back to the ‘70s in its unhinged, cosmic vibe, an after-hours treat that serves up a number of different styles of music. Most enjoyable of all are the two George Lewis Jr guest slots, the catchy ‘This Son Is Coming Up’ and the cool soulful house of ‘Close To Everything’, but ‘Changalaxy’ is rewarding for its strangeness, like being plunged into an aquarium with nothing but a synthesizer. The track titles say it all – any album with ‘Simulation Crocodile Skin Handbag’ and ‘Diamonds in the Mind of Talula’ has to be worth hearing, surely?! Cosmic, man… and hugely enjoyable with it.
