Peaking Lights – ‘936’ – (Domino)

Peaking Lights - 936Describing this album from Wisconsin’s Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis is not at all easy in terms of styles – so it’s much better to say that Peaking Lights offer up some remarkable slow music for times of bliss. Some of it sounds like dub, or slow funk, or reggae – but the way the music drifts in and out of consciousness makes it perfect for the small hours when a bit of warmth is required. Electronics are largely the name of the game but there is plenty of human interaction too, whether through Indra’s dislocated vocals or the deep emotion each of the tracks brings, with club track ‘All The Sun That Shines’ a perfect example. There is an underlying ominous tone at times, bringing a bit of edge, and the reverb can be truly massive, throwing things out of sync. The record has been a long time in the making, but unfolds as if it was made yesterday – proof that the musical chemistry between Coyes and Dunis – who are a couple themselves – works well. Give it three listens, and I guarantee the spell will be cast.
