PPP (formerly known as The Platinum Pied Pipers but changing after a lawsuit) step up to the mark with their second album. Having shared stages with Roy Ayers and Mark Ronson last year, their return to the studio builds handsomely on the promise shown in their ‘Triple P’ debut. ‘Abundance’ has a real community feel to it, yet the lyrics have more individual value – whether they’re set to soulful or funky beats. There’s a really good edge to the sound as well, nothing processed here, and in the vocals of Coultrain, Karma Stewart and Jamila Raegan plenty of raw emotion. First single ‘On A Cloud’ is particularly good, its brassy overtones resounding well, but in truth the whole album works really well, and on reflection couldn’t really come from anywhere else than Detroit. An early tonic in 2009.
