System 7 is a project that never seems to run out of steam or energy. Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy have been recording under the moniker for around 25 years now, and even the ambient sister project, Mirror System, has developed a longevity all of its own. These two albums can be grouped together naturally because quite apart from the titles the more energetic and driving beats of System 7 complement the thoughtful bliss of Mirror System. What consistently impresses about the tracks is the quality of their construction, and the intricate lines that weave in and out of each other. Central to each is a strong rhythm track, so that even in a chilled Mirror System piece like Far Journeys there is a very positive energy. Not surprisingly X-Port is by far the quicker of the two, and a track like Chic Psychedelic has an easy ambience but also a driving beat. Fans will know to expect this of course, but we should never take System 7 for granted, as they have quietly but effectively become one of our most reliable long serving dance acts.
