Todd Terje – It’s Album Time – (Olsen Records)

One word sums up the Todd Terje experience – fun. It’s evident from start to finish in his first album, which has the rare distinction of living up to all the hype it has generated. What he does so well is to allow for some experimentation early on, and then from half way through he drops the real disco bangers, mixing up his Moroder and Parliament with something individual only to him. So early on we get the synth wizardry of ‘’, not to mention a couple of numbers where the beat strays far from view – but where there is always a melody to grab on to. And then, with ‘Strandbar’, the cosmic disco elements make themselves fully known – and with a sweep we’re in to the single ‘Delorean Dynamite’, with its Frankie Goes To Hollywood bass line meets Space’s ‘Magic Fly’. Even this has competition for the best track, though, with ‘Oh Joy’ an epic synth chorale and ‘Inspector Norse’ finishing up with Terje’s humour nicely in evidence. ‘It’s Album Time’ is a joyous experience, the musical equivalent of the sun coming out from behind the clouds. Buy it and be transported!
