Oslo’s top club manages to bottle some of its essence for Smalltown Supersound’s first mix compilation and it’s a mindblowing mix of space disco, psychedelic boogie and sheer toupee-whisking fun. Bear in mind Norway has thrown us the marvellous Lindstrom and Prins Thomas and if the clubs are like this it’s quite logical, captain. Geir ‘g-Ha’ Aspenes and Olanskii have taken the bold step of featuring tracks from their Norwegian mates so as to provide a document of the current Norwegian scene, as well as nodding to the country’s dance pioneers like Mental Overdrive. New names like Blackbelt Anderson and Magnus International fire out pulsing electro-bogie next to a Prins Thomas mix of Crue-I-Grand Orchestra and there’s a remarkable Mental Overdrive remix of cosmic rockers 120 Days’ ‘Come Out, Come Down, Fade Out, Be Gone’. The set boasts a similar hallucinogenic looseness to the Optimo excursions, as well as reckless disregard for genres.
