NRK have won many admirers this year for the ‘Coast2Coast’ series, but the style of music on ‘Altered States’ is what they’ve done so well over the years in deeper music. Deep house – sometimes minimal, sometimes more progressive, is mixed with dubby or funky overtones thrown in. Sometimes relaxing, other times energetic – and perfectly blended to show those contrasts. The unmixed double brings in master of the deep David Alvarado, adds some funk with Danos’ ‘Pre Flight’ dub of Mood II Swing’s ‘Slippery Track’ and offers three excellent selections from Jamie Anderson, two tense, darker tracks from Peace Division. A fine and unhurried set from the Bristol label, with just the right amount of urgency in the beats.
