Ignore the dissertation-based title; the ambience part is only half the story as well. The experiments bit, escaping pigeonholes rather than anything techy, rings truest as the eating habits of Ghittoni and Malfatti’s fourth LP is a varied multi-course palette-satisfier. Classy blues, soul and lounge, both forceful and considerate, mesh together with poetry contrasts, cultural jazz also finding feet needing the funk, and ‘Within’ going dub hunting but packing dual-action, un-dub vocals. The basis of going up-down-up-down through the gears comes naturally, and this is a sweet set of tasters bringing its manners to the turntable.
