Various Artists – Watergate 18 Mixed By Butch – (Watergate)

It would be easy to collect the Watergate series just for the wonderfully exotic artwork they manage to pull out the bag every time…but fortunately there is some musical substance to the series as well. Butch steps up to the decks for their ‘coming of age’ edition – not that age is a factor on The Horrorist’s ‘One Night In NYC’, unfortunately. I know I should probably be in on the joke here, but a track about date rape doesn’t do anybody any favours, no matter how decent the Villalobos remix. Glossing over that, this mix has some nice nocturnal moments from Minilogue (‘When Sadness Releases, Joy Arises’), Polar Inertia (‘The Last Vehicle’) and Heiko Laux (‘Souldancer’) – and drops them nicely in among some more energetic efforts from Sigha (‘Politics Of Dying’) and Rocco (‘Tbt3’). Worth hearing for those and further confirmation that there’s plenty of life in the Berlin mix series yet.
