Richard Fearless is a great choice for the latest Bureau B instalment, because the music Death in Vegas make is heavily indebted to the brands of dark electro and Krautrock in which the label specialise. So here we are with two albums’ worth of electronic music stripped down to the bone, with established names (Moebius, Faust), newer ones (Automat) or the less familiar, which means the medieval folk band Ougenweide. In the course of a complete listen, though, the track that remains in the head is a monster, Moebius & Beerbohm’s ‘Doppelschnitt’ – all twenty minutes of disjointed rhythm and dark colours. It brings an end to the first CD, which also features the cold chords of Ricehmann’s ‘Abendlicht’ and the weird, mind altering loops of Asmus Tietchens’ ‘Falter-Lamento’. Disc two, on the other hand, enjoys otherworldly signals from ‘Urania’ courtesy of Qluster, vocal tracks from Phantom Band and the dubby Automat and a triumphant finish from Faust in ‘Herbststimmung’. Richard Fearless displayed his talent for making a great compilation on Death In Vegas’ ‘Back To Mine’ a eleven years back – this is equally as good.
