Various Artists – Prins Thomas Presents Paradise Goulash – (Eskimo Recordings)

When a DJ with the eclectic outlook of Prins Thomas releases a treble header of mixes you can be sure there will be thrills and spills aplenty. This is definitely the case with Paradise Goulash, a set promising an original recipe with natural ingredients. And so it proves, with a richly varied trio. Perhaps most immediate for the casual listener is the third set, which progresses into some really lush techno from Petar Dundov, Evigt Mörker, Luke Abbott and a whole lot more. That comes after some lovely deepness on the second set, where Hakimonu sets the tone early on, before Forever Sound’s ‘Glowworm’ shimmers hypnotically in the half light. It’s the first disc where the word ‘cosmic’ could perhaps best be used, and while the likes of Richard Schneider Jr.’s ‘Samba-Trip’ burst with good feeling, and The Durian Brothers’ ‘Weggeputscht’ seems to want to operate at several speeds at once, NSI’s ‘Nikita’ seems to hark back to the psychedelia of the 1970s and Steve Hillage. Thomas’s mixing is excellent, especially in the carefully worked blends of the third, and the fun packaging shows exactly what’s in store. A square meal with plenty of spice awaits!
