The annual round-up of all things Kompakt is always worth catching, a point in the electronic music calendar that is reassuring by its presence – and by its continued quality. Each time their formula of rounding up the last 12 months and adding in a healthy number of exclusives seems to work really well. This time the newly available tunes are from Michael Mayer, Jürgen Paape, Wassermann and Superpitcher, whose ‘Freiherr’ is a distinctive and strangely effective blend of recorders. Mathias Aguayo’s creepy vampire song ‘Run Away From The Sun’ is here, seemingly exiled from the 1980s, while there are bright textures from Dauwd, cultured techno from Gui Boratto and John Tejada and blissful moments from Dave DK and Hunter/Game. On this evidence the Cologne label is still in rude health!
