Elektronische Musik: Experimental German Rock & Electronic Music 1972-83
Soul Jazz

Soul Jazz continue their high standard of in-depth compilations by showing how modern electronic music started gestating in the German arts laboratories, giving birth to a whole new movement whose repercussions are still felt and homage today. It’s to Soul Jazz’s credit that they represent all sides of the spectrum on this stellar two-CD compilation, from flute-guitar jam sessions through to the other-worldly space-funk innovations of Can, in the process capturing a relentlessly innovative and individual movement, which leapt at using technological developments as they came in at the time. Familiar names are here, like the afore-mentioned Can [Maybe oddly, I Want More and late 70s A Spectacle in favour of early experiments], Faust, Cluster, Tangerine Dream, Popol Vuh, Amon Duul, Ash Ra Tempel and the ever-riveting NEU! [Unsurprisingly, no Kraftwerk], along with notable electronic pioneers including Dieter Moebius, Rodelius, Conrad Schnitzler and Michael Bundt. The obscurities provide moments which are never less than fascinating, whether Harmonia demonstrating the link between motorik’s robo-scuttle and the Velvet Underground or Gila’s stab at ethereal Woodstock-style bliss.
