Ghana Special: Modern Highlife, Afro Sounds & Ghanian Blues 1968-1981
Soundway

Hot on the heels of their invigorating explorations of Nigerian music, Soundway move along the coast to take in Ghana, building on their earlier explorations of the country’s funk output. This proves to be a highly educational trip of style and sound clashes, with label head and collector Miles Cleret visiting the country several times to unearth some rare gems. The variety is huge, but a few worth mentioning are the swaying rhythms of Christy Azuma & Uppers Internationals’ ‘Din Ya Sugri’, the propulsive ‘Nya Asem Hwe’ from the City Boys Band and the syncopations of Hedzoleh Soundz’ ‘Edinya Benya’, all from CD1. Honny & The Bees Band make a reappearance with the wonderful ‘Sisi Mbon’ to close out CD2, which also includes Oscar Sulley’s popular ‘Bukom’. An excellent companion piece to Soundway’s previous releases, once again lovingly packaged.
