An interesting concept kicks off this new label and compilation. Six different artist from different regions and / or continents contribute their own audio creations to form the sound of the Equinox, which may or may not be “the pursuit of the perfect beat”, ala Afrika Bambaataa circa 1983. Seemingly it’s a sound that has no time for borders or the restricting confines of genres, happy instead to utilise whatever style is available to express their aim. So we get Philadelphia’s Emynd playing the blues, almost, backtracking hip-hop through electronic beats and a haunting vocal sample on “Positive Affirmation”. Or ArcSin’s (of Definitive Jux fame) synth laden genre-straddling “Poplock Axefists”, a standout amongst four similar cuts from ArcSin. Danny Decock’s “Obscure” wanders in downtempo bliss even with the heavyweight guitar weilding. Overall, the six artists wander from offbeat electronica to roughly hewn D&B, making a few stops along the way to complete an intense and intriguing audio journey, even if you’re never quite sure what the destination is. Fantastically packaged, too.
