Maurice Aymard & Sasse Backwards EP (Incl. Massimiliano Pagliara & Luvless Remixes)

As the last decade entered it’s business end, Finnish beatsmith Sasse was making the kind of lush deep house and soulful techno which helped bring European dance music to the dominating grooves of underground dance. Now seven or eight years later that refinement and sonic sophistication is still in evidence, exemplified brilliantly by this collaboration with Maurice Aynard which scores highly on charm, sophistication and elegance. The original of the title track is the best of the two versions on offer from the duo, but it’s when left in the hands of Massimiliano Pagliara when it comes alive, sounding not too dissimilair to the early Innervisions sound. Which, by the way, is another way of saying fucking fantastic. Luvless’ effort to these ears is less successful, just a little too on the deep side. Everything though is trumped by ‘Athabasca’, a record which swings and cavorts delightfully through it’s near seven minutes, boasting handclaps, droning organ work and infectious bass which screams summer. One of those records for the terraces at 3pm when the rave is at that glorious mid range pace. Top marks.
