Miguel Campbell – Back In Flight School – Hot Creations

Words to effect of, ‘To prove that we are medically capable to fly’ form part of the opening gambit to ‘Back To Flight School’ and I guess if this is something akin to a concept album then permission is formerly granted. You don’t have to look any further than the opening ‘Flight School’ to describe Miguel Campbell’s effortlessly cool reimagining of P-Funk and Imagination’s bass lines, coupled with more than a nod to eighties rhythms and production values, although of course all replayed with a contemporary twist that sounds particularly appealing today. Shooting to fame via his debut ‘Something Special’ (which is also included) must have seemed like a daunting act to follow, but Miguel does so in stylish abundance with titles like the sassy ‘Love Electric’ and ‘Beams Of Light’ sounding notably funky. In days when a lot of time is spent rehearsing early 90’s House it is refreshing to step back a decade to indulge in the era’s more sumptuous, more soulful sounds as well. The album also imaginatively shifts tempos and moods throughout the journey which only adds to the strength and diversity of this long player.
