It’s been a long while away for Darren Emerson in a solo singles capacity – but his return proves the wait was worth it. ‘Crash Jack’ is, on the face of it, a basic bit of work, but it’s that fact that makes the track so good on repeated listens. Emerson has a keen ear for noise, and the rushes of distortion that go with each break are thrilling, the rhythm driving the music forward, and though it sticks to one pitch the momentum gathers with every beat. Majik Johnson seizes on that potential too, powering up the lower end with a bit more funk but staying close to the track’s repetitive essence. Already being slammed by John Digweed and James Zabiela, Emerson’s return is true to form.
