Lookback

Three mighty Italian producers ripping it up

LOOKBACK is a project born during summer 2010, from a team of three Italian DJs/producers: Mattias, G80’s and Giga. Their first hit single was ‘Suonasse’, a song which contained a sample of a famous Italian song from the seventies. The track quickly reached the top ten in the Beatport Chart even though the sample was in Italian and was played and playlisted by international DJs such as DJ Chuckie, Tocadisco and Jesse Voorn.’Bianka’ and ‘Musika’ soon followed smashing up dancefloors along the way and now these cool as you like studio friends are back with a monster. Over at DMC however, we just want to know who is that girl!!?

Words : Dan Prince

Giga, Mattias and G80’s – welcome to DMCWORLD boys. Three prolificproducers who are setting dancefloors alight at the moment. How long ago did you decide to join forces and create Lookback?

“The Lookback project was born by chance during summer 2010. We were in the studio together listening to some old tracks to find some samples and we found a popular Italian track from the seventies (Tipitipitì by Orietta Berti) to work on. And so ‘Suonasse’ was born, our first single.”

What does each member bring to the studio outfit – who is good at what?

“Ideas come from all of us. G80’s takes care of the technical part as well as Mattias. Giga is the musician, the man behind the keyboard!”

New tune coming out on Ego Music, ‘Sudo’ – tell us about the track…

‘Sudo’ is the third single of the project. One day Giga, the older of the group, brings to the studio the track that we sampled to create the song. And so ‘Sudo’ came out very quickly, this always happens when we find something that works well.”

Are there plans to take Lookback out as a live show or a new Italian House Mafia DJ set up?!

“At the moment we have a DJ set with only two of us in it. But we are planning to bring all of us in for the big gigs and festivals this summer.”

What is the current Lookback top 10 you are spinning?

“These are our ten most played tracks at the moment…”

Format B  – Socks And Sandals (Original Mix)

Miami Dub Machine – Bogota (Cube Guys Mix)

Trent Cantrelle – Night Like This (Original Mix)

Coqui Selection – Dissko (Original Mix)

Belocca & Soneec – By The Way You Dance (Original Mix)

Disco Dice – I Want Bellevue (Original Mix)

Giga, why did you choose a DJ/production as your career? Did you any other aspirations for a job growing up?

“I started spinning records when I was really young and after many years of music and with the technologic evolution in computer music, becoming a producer has been very easy and natural. It’s difficult for me to think at a different carreer than what I decided to do!”

Mattias – you have produced and remixed some mighty artists such as John Dhalback, DJ Dan and Nari & Milani. What single piece of production to date are you most proudest of?

“It’s very hard to say it, because every new production or remix it’s a new challenge. But at the moment the Lookback project is giving me a lot of satisfaction.”

G80 – you started life with a love of hip hop before going on holiday to Ibiza and discovering house. Who were the early hip hop artists you were giving props to back in the day?

“I used to play tracks from A Tribe Called Quest, Naughty By Nature, Run DMC, Public Enemy…and a lot of breaks records, because I was good in freestyle technique, scratching, cueing and stuff…”

Ego seems to be on fire at the moment, what makes this label great?

“Probably because of a crew of well qualified people that are carefully following music trends. They discover talented artists and worlwide hit tracks, this makes them great!”

What vocalist from around the world would you love to get into the studio and make a track with?

“This is a hard question, there are a lot of great vocalists and performers…but we think that the most interesting voice in the electronic dance music scene is Nadia Ali. A dream is to make Bjork sing a Lookback track!”

What is each other’s most annoying habit in the studio?

“Well, Mattias always keeps the volume too loud, Giga is always on the phone with his many girlfriends and G80’s is always in the office drinking coffee!!

Each one of you…what is the greatest record you have ever played to a dancefloor?

“Giga: Frankie Knuckles – ‘The Whistle Song’

Mattias: Tiga – ‘You Gonna Want Me’

G80’s: David Morales – ‘Needin’ You’

What is the best club you have all played at?

“The best gig in the best club that took place recently when we had the opportunity to play in South Korea at Club Answer in Seoul. The first international experience for us together. The club was packed and everyone was there for us. Something unbelievable.”

What other producers from around the world do you gather inspiration from at the moment?

“We love sounds and we get inspirations from Chris Lake, Alex Kenji, Muzzaik, David Penn. But we always try  to do something different from the others.”

And finally, what is coming next in 2012 from the trio?

“We are working hard in the studio, we have a lot of collaboration with international producers, a couple of new singles and a lot of remixes of course. A lot of good stuff is coming!!”
