Pied Piper

He’s back!!! The mighty UK Garage don Pied Piper makes grand return with his first single release since his UK no.1 smash ‘Do You Really Like It’ with The Masters of Ceremonies back in 2001. 16 years later he’s enlisted the talents of his musical brothers Unknown MC, PSG, MC Creed, MC DT & Sharky P on his brand new release on WAT Records, ‘For The Ladies’ and “We’re lovin’ it like the last one!”

Words by Ratha Gud
Hi Pied Piper welcome to DMCworld! Where are you in the world right now?
I’m at home, in bed! Lol, but I’m in Central London right now.
What was the first piece of music you heard today?
I haven’t heard anything  yet as I have just woken up, but the last piece of music I heard last night was a remix of ‘For The Ladies’ that myself and Sovereign have been working on and….it sounds cold!
You’re finally back with a brand new single ‘For The Ladies’  tell us a bit about the release?
It was an idea that came about in 2007, I got all the boys together with the track idea and we completed it in a few weeks, but the track was never released even though we had a few mixes, we wasn’t happy with the music. In 2016, myself, Unknown Mc and Sovereign had an idea to revamp the track and give it a facelift. And here we are today…
Would you regard yourself as a bit of a ladies man then?
Obviously! Lol, jokes aside, I think we have enough of them in our group, lol (not mentioning any names!)
Why has it taken you so long to make a follow up record and what inspired you get back in the saddle now?
Being honest, in 2003 Garage music changed and people weren’t as interested in listening to anything new from the Garage scene.  We have always made music, but it seemed people only wanted to listen to old Garage and it was difficult to make new music that people wanted to hear. It felt the scene was going backwards with regards to new production. We have always made music, but we have waited to release anything new.

What have you been up to in the meantime, have you been working in music at all?
We haven’t stopped making music, we are currently in the process of launching our own label WAT Records and have 7 vocal releases ready to go.
How do you set about writing tracks and where do you get your inspiration from?
Inspiration comes from everywhere, some are ideas have been mine, some have been my brother Unknown MC’s and some have been combined. The artists also bring ideas to the table when we are working in the studio. I have also written tracks with K Warren (Something In Your Eyes) and Sticky (Boo) who helped with a remix and Sovereign (There You Go), who has been a integral part of our rebirth.
You’re still regularly playing out and about, where can we see you play and what gigs are you most looking forward to this summer?
What I am looking forward to the most is the WAT Records & For The Ladies industry launch party on the 29th June at Proud. Where we will be showcasing a lot of our new talent with the usual suspects, Creed, DT, Sharky P and PSG, along with some other faces in the industry. Event wise there is so many great festivals this year, but I always look forward to Garage Nation and the One Dance festival at Streatham Common.  Abroad wise, I am looking forward to playing in the Bahamas for the first time.
How would you compare the garage scene now to back in 2001?
It’s different – its not better or worse, but one thing I do prefer about the Garage scene in 2017 is that for the first time in many years you can play a set which is 50% old and 50% new and people are really enjoying the mixture of new music. The crowd are very accepting of new tracks which is why I became a DJ to begin with.
Who is rocking it on the garage scene and who should we be on the look out for?
WAT Records are rocking it and all the artists we have coming through are rocking it! Look out for MC Darky, Konflict, Soul Nana and Saint to name a few.
Looking back, what piece of precious advice would you give to yourself when you were first starting out as a musician?
Expect the unexpected….
Who are your biggest influencers?
I would probably say my brother Unknown MC and outside of that anyone who has ever created any beautiful music. But someone who really influenced us when we were younger was our hip-hop manager Ice T.
We come to your house and raid your record collection, which embarrassing record do you need to chuck out the window as we arrive?
The most embarrassing things is – I don’t have any records! I gave them all away to Dan at DNR
Which record makes you say “Damn, I wish I’d made that”?
Definitely, Public Enemy ‘Rebel Without A Pause’ – I remember the first time I heard it, the hairs on my neck stood up!
Finally what’s coming next from you?
