Congratulations on winning the DMC USA Final this weekend… How does it feel to win in your home town?
Thank you Dan. It feels special, very special. I was able to perform in front of my family, my friends, and the students that I teach at Dubspot NYC. Thus I also feel relieved and happy that I didn’t let any of these people down!
How was the event?
“The event was great for so many reasons – so many different people from the young kids to the old kids (!) rocking it out. Santos Party House is a very cool spot for a battle.
What where the highlights?
“For me, Lord Finesse rocking the party with the classics. Precision and I-Dee tearing up the showcases. Red Alert repeatedly demanding “Poo Poo Juice,” which is an adult beverage whose ingredients remain a mystery to this day! The DJs’ scratches, beat juggles and various miming gestures involving fingers – the three fundamental areas of DJing. And hearing “and the winner is, from New York City…”
As a World Champion in the battle, and now the US Champion of the 6 min category, are you going for the world record and attempting to win all three categories?
“Ha ha, how about I win two categories before we start talking about a sweep? If not a sweep, then at least a very tidy room.”
Who was your main competition in the US Finals?
“Many people brought very nice sets, but I think Mista-B stood out a lot. Stylistically, he brought that new school Cali funk, and technically, he did a lot of original (what I would call) ‘slow push patterns’. The showcase battle is also, maybe more so than the Supremacy, a trial of personal mental endurance. So, I spent a lot of time battling the DJ inside of me that wanted to be nervous and go hug his mother.”
What countries/DJs are your biggest competitors at this year’s 25th anniversary World Finals?
“Yeah, good question. Could you please tell me the answer so I know whose luggage in which to place over 100ml of toothpaste and a pair of scissors please?”
