Left, right and centre, it’s all about M.I.A. right now. You’ve heard her story before – Sri Lanka, the UK, then some fruitful hook-ups, which have led her to work with Pulp’s Steve McKay and others. Maybe you’ll find it difficult to share the media’s unanimous enthusiasm for smart girl Maya Arulpragasam if ragga/dancehall ain’t your cuppa. However her shrewd, politically/socially conscious lyrics are unquestionably bringing a fresh, feminine angle to street culture – all too often dominated by male machismo. With judicious nods at punky electro ‘Bucky Done Gun’ rocks the party.
