SOUL JAZZ

Regular readers will know that I’m a big fan of the electronic future foraging of Michael Kirkham and Alan James, who’ve turned out pearlers on Sunday Best and their own label which have established a kind of jittering blend of Detroit techno and old school electro strains. Now widening the sound, they slide effortlessly in to Soul Jazz’s current stream of diverse electronic trailblazers with two slabs of Moroder-shadowed electro. ‘441100’ manages to infect the windscreen Giorgio-in-Detroit  panorama with with Italo-disco pulses. ‘Persuasion’ brings in an early 80s live bass over a groove which comes over like motor cruising over the Brooklyn Bridge in the early 80s. But ultimately Subway love music so these strains flow effortlessly and, in the process, create a sound totally of their own.
