Been a while since I thrust forth a new Touchin’ Bass missile but this label debut from Sohail Azad, aka Kero, is a no-holds-barred belter, maintaining label supreme Andrea Parker’s manifesto of daring to go where few have dreamed of. The man’s already popped up on Bpitch, Ghostly International and Shitkatapult and his own Detroit Underground Records. His sound is immediately arresting, like lathering a bulldog’s bottom and getting hit in the eye with a sudden shit, the risk is always there but the actuality comes as a shock. Rhythms are set set up, whether hip-hop or warped electro humping drum ‘n’ bass, then morph into something else as creepers spring out of the mangled electronic undergrowth and send it somewhere else, whether alien massage parlour or Cybertron’s chemical toilet. ‘On Acid Again’ is particularly great, starting dark and boxy then getting attacked by Jackson Pollock with a 303. Classic Detroit techno even manages to raise a luxurious sigh amidst the evil 808 prowl of ‘Modem Wait’ but whisked away in the ejector seat to make way for yet more sonic frolics. Still one of our greatest labels.
