Soma has never been one to rest on its mighty laurels, 2008 noticeable for the label corralling and unleashing a stunning array of new talent. Now they’ve gone one better and started the Somabeta offshoot to deal with young electronic whippersnappers whose fresh ideas keep the music alive with a permanent stiffie. Names here hail from South America, Australia, the US and, of course, Glasgow, demonstrating a truly global straddle. The music somehow remains true to the Soma tradition of progress, innovation and dancefloor carnage, each producer blessed with individual character traits which filter through into the music, although one thing they do have in common is loads of bass in the under-carriage. Some were introduced last year but say hello to Audiofillia, Let’s Go Outside  [on form with ‘You Make me struggle’ blessed with a sympathetically-twisted Jean Ramesse remix], Jandroide, Gary Beck, Joe Stawarz, Sui Genera [Detroit heaven!], the fearsome Mr Copy and Harvey McKay. Great way to start the year; the 2009 Soma compilation will be the best yet if this anything to go by.
