Back To Mine with Cool Tiger

Cool Tiger is the French label owner behind vinyl-only house and techno imprint, Junction Records. Although his recent releases tend to veer more towards the harder side of electronica, his tastes are most definitely diverse — just as this ‘Back 2 Mine’ playlist confirms. From hip hop to rap to indie, Cool Tiger’s picks here speak volumes of a producer for whom eclecticism is clearly a key trait of his musical make up. A delicious mix of the renowned and the obscure, there’s plenty here for both casual music fans and hardcore listeners to get their teeth into…

Funkadelic VS Moodymann – Funky Slop (Moodymann Mix)

I grabbed this super limited EP at Rush Hour in Amsterdam recently. For me that was a no-brainer, Moodymann, George Clinton and Funkadelic have been such an inspiration over the years! Perfect fusion of pop, funk, rock and electronica.

De La Soul – A Roller Skating Jam

Perfect hip-hop track, featuring Q-tip, my favourite rapper. Has to be listened to every Saturday morning of your life.

Devendra Banhart – At the Hop

Devendra Banhat opened me to the mid-00s folk scene. I enjoy the first part of his career the most, when he would only use a couple of guitars and a vocal in his tracks. Another proof that constraints are very beneficial for creativity!

Alphonse – Forgotten Memories

Another great feel-good track from an interesting EP. A bit of breakbeat, a vibraphone sample and nice synths = great day ahead.

The Shoes – Time To Dance

It’s hard to find good pop music, and it’s even harder to find good French pop music. This song has been on repeat since its release in 2011. It’s catchy, fresh and somewhat imperfect, which I really enjoy.

Animal Collective – Working/ Tantrum (from Oddsac)

I will never be able to express how much Animal Collective’s music changed my life. I had never listened to indie music that organic and full of contrasts before. I love how they are always trying to push the boundaries of live music by using unexpected arrangements and experimenting on sound textures. This is an excerpt of their 2010 visual album “Oddsac” which encompasses exactly what I enjoy: harmonies and dissonances, mindfulness and energy.

Prodigy – Voodoo People (The Chemical Brothers Remix)

The production quality of this remix is just insane! I’m a fan of The Chemical Brothers, particularly of their early discography. They made a bunch of B-sides and remixes that you should definitely check out.

Roy Davis Jr – Watch Them Come

I don’t really understand how one can write such a beautiful, positive, solar song. If you feel down some day remember to play this song and to dance naked in your living room.

RED-X – Dee’s Knots

I listened to Daft Punk’s 1997 Essential Mix when I was around 11 and I remember clearly this was the first time I understood what a DJ set is. I frantically looked for the tracklist, then digged into the discography of each artist I could find. This RED-X track was part of that Essential Mix and just perfectly captures grooves and emotions through clever sampling.

Differ-Ent – Differ-Ent(ly)

Differ-Ent is one of DJ Bone’s side projects, released on the very diverse label Don’t Be Afraid. The first time I heard this, suddenly everything clicked together: this would define the sound of my label Junction Records. It’s difficult to explain why but this song makes me feel very alive, possibly because it triggers a whole range of emotions: nostalgia, deep joy, confidence and some kind of meditative state at once.
