Back To Mine With O. de Lanzac

Congo-born, Greek-raised and now London-based, O. de Lanzac was part of the Quad Throw Salchow band that had tunes on labels like DFA. She has dropped solo works on BBE, Underground Collective Tek and produced some tracks and an album on Tony Carrasco’s label Multitronix where she always mixes up Latin, funk and downtempo. This year she has been busy with new music on Open Bar Music, Nervous Records and AtJazz. As her new ‘Sassy EP’ drops on connected, DMCWorld goes back to mine with O. de Lanzac.

Missa Luba – Kyrie

Μy parents used to blast Missa Luba on the record player, back in Africa.

Les Bantous de la capitale Makambo Mibale
Anthemic Congolese Rhumba from Brazza.

Franco & Tabu Ley – Ngungi

More Congolese rumba kings, from the other side of the river.

Tabu Ley Rochereau Eswi Yo Wapi

Epic! I’ve tried endless times to stay still throughout Eswi Yo Wapi… in vain!

Erik Satie – Gymnopédie 1

1888 pearl, cutting edge piano composition.

Ravel – Le Gibet

This causes an undefined mechanical reaction in me; the stretched chords, voicing, cadence, that gorgeous pedal note… Great for unblocking energy and exercising intuition, jazz in 1908.

Ravel - Gaspard de la Nuit, No. 2, "Le Gibet" Sheet Music + Audio

Thelonious Monk Quartet – Monk’s Dream

Precise, percussive, unique, and groundbreaking. Always wondered how Thelonious played/hit those ivories, until YouTube came along.

Heitor Villa-Lobos – Prélude 3

When I was a pre-teen/teen, my mum and grandma had me take classical guitar lessons at the Greek Odeion (conservatory) for few years. I enjoyed how Villalobos’ mastered sudden bursts of emotion.

Stetsasonic – Talkin’ All That Jazz

A new device in the artist’s arsenal. A new era. Just brilliant.

Stereo MCs – Step It Up

Fireball! At one time, I lived on the 13th floor of a YWCA in Central London. ‘Connected’ took over my cd player for many moons. I’d hit play, first thing in the morning, to tune my spirit to the celestial frequencies. Classic!

O’ de Lanzac ‘Sassy EP’ is out now on connected.
