Bingo Players

The Dutch electronic duo on top of the world

Paul, Maarten welcome back to DMCWORLD. And what a start to a year you’ve had. Where in the world were you when ‘Get Up’ hit No ! in the UK charts?

“Thanks for having us. We were both home, working in the studio on some new music when we got the call about the record going number one in the UK. We couldn’t have been more excited to hear the news.”

Lovely quote from you about hitting numero uno, Growing up in the Netherlands we have always watched the UK charts as a great indicator of what’s to come next and really admired and looked up to great British dance artists and producers like The Prodigy and The KLF” – it must have felt pretty good keeping Calvin Harris, Taylor Swift and Rihanna off the top spot then?

“Ha Ha Well we didn’t see it like that but yes, it felt really good to be at the top of the charts. We play out so often and really try to get our music out there so for one of our records to go number one, we just felt like it was such a blessing, having the support of so many people and having the record played on the radio pretty nonstop was a dream come true.”

So what is coming next from you studio wise?

“Well, we have been keeping really busy in the studio. Most days when we have time off and we are home, the two of us work on new tracks. If you come see us live then you will know what we have been working on in the studio. We’ve been previewing our new records out and the crowd reaction has been really exciting.”

You are playing at The Ministry of Sound in London tonight, the venue is really firing at the moment. Looking forward to it…?

“Yes, of course! Ministry of Sound is one of our favorite venues. It’s an iconic venue that has had such great talent on its’ stage. We always love playing gigs at MOS and the crowd that the club bring.

You have just returned from  massive Northern Emerican tour – Miami, New York, Montreal, Atlantic City, Vegas, Seattle, El Paso, Denver and Edmonton all smashed. Where were the highlights?

“The highlights came from playing packed shows every night. The energy that these kids bring into the venue is really amazing. Our show in New York was during a blizzard, even with the crazy weather our crowd still showed up, sold out the venue and had a great time with us. That was a special moment, even with terrible weather, our fans came out to have a good time. All of the gigs were really great though, El Paso and Edmonton were pretty massive!”

So you checked into Vegas and Atlantic City. The two biggest gambling cities in the world – what are your poisons, a little roulette, maybe some blackjack – have you ever had a brilliant win?

“Unfortunately we generally don’t get the chance to sit down and play but we are always up for a good game of roulette!”

Maarten – you are a sucker for Daft Punk. What are your thoughts on this whole Columbia Records / new album rumor…

“I mean, I couldn’t be more psyched to hear new music! It doesn’t really matter to me who releases the record, it’s DAFT PUNK! They are legends and I am sure whatever they release will be epic!”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

“This changes every night depending on the crowd and what we are feeling but some records that we have been playing out  a lot are:

Dada Life “Out Of My Mind” remix

Bassjackers and Kenneth G – Duckface

Tiesto – Chasing Summers (R3hab and Quintino Remix)

Maurizio Gubellini vs Macklemore – Who’s In The Thriftshop (Bingo Players Mashup)

Dimitry Vegas & Like Mike – Wakanda

W&W and Ummet Ozcan – The Code

Arno Cost – Head Up

Quintino and Ralvero – Jackpot

Carnage and Borgore – Incredible

Dada Life – So Young So High

Another great from you Paul: “I’d rather play for 30,000 people that I don’t know than a 1,000 people that I know. Playing for family and friends, that is the worst!” Are you worried you’d fuck up or something?

“No, not really worried about not performing well, to us that comes naturally from doing it for so long. It’s just nerves man, when you have your close friends or family around you, you really want them to be proud of what you are doing. When we do big festivals we know that many of the people are already familiar with us, they know our music and they are there to go out of their minds, in smaller intimate setting, the dynamic can be a bit different.”

You have over 30 worldwide music festivals under your belts. Where would you put right at the top – EDC Vegas was pretty damned cool?

“Each festival has it’s own flavor and that is what makes playing festivals so fun. If they were all the same we would get pretty bored of playing them. EDC Vegas is amazing, so it Ultra and we really enjoyed playing Electric Zoo in New York City last year. We love gigs in New York and playing to such a large crowd within the city was really fun!”

Where can we find you at Miami WMC 2013? Looking forward to it?

“We are totally looking forward to it. We love playing in Miami and we are pumped for all of the WMC madness! Saturday the 16th we are playing the Ultra Worldwide Europe House stage at 6PM and weekend two we are performing the main stage on Sunday at 5PM. During the week, we are going to be throwing a Hysteria records pool party at the Shelborne Hotel March 19th which we are really pumped about. We have great DJ’s like Bassjackers and Sandro Silva playing with us.”

Will we see you in Ibiza this summer?

“Yes! Will we see you?!!?”

Heh heh. I live there! What other careers do you think you would have ended up doing if you hadn’t fallen into music by stealing each others coats?

“Ha Ha who knows? Honestly, we really have no idea. Music has become such a huge part of our lives for so long that it seems almost impossible that we could do anything else!”

What do you think are each others greatest qualities as producers?

“Those secrets must be kept in the studio ! Ha Ha.”

If you could change one thing about each, what would it be?

“Clone ourselves so one set of Bingo Players could produce at home while the other set of Bingo Players played out!”

And finally, I have been reading all of the interviews with you from the past few years. Every single interviewer asks you about your name and the connection to the old aged pensioners game bingo. Are you any nearer to knowing all of the quirky terms for this silly game?

“Honestly, we are not, though we are up for the challenge. Perhaps we face off in bingo sometime?”
