David Solano

Boom! The Colombian born Miami based producer explodes yet again with ‘Big Bang’

Interview by Dan Prince

Nobody embodies electronic dance music’s international DIY vibe quite like Colombian-born, Miami based DJ and producer David Solano. Gifted with a knack for arena-size beats, Solano’s releases on premium imprints Spinnin Records, Ultra, Black Hole Recordings, quickly earned global support from titans like Tiesto, R3hab, Quintino, Steve Aoki, and more. Solano’s key role in the success of Life in Color, the world’s largest paint party, has also made him one of the most respected names in the business of music. He now returns to causing chaos on the dancefloors of the world, this time creating this year’s Official Life In Color Anthem…’Big Bang’

David a massive welcome back to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you today?

Thank you very much and glad to be back. . I’m in Miami right now doing some sessions with a vocalist for an upcoming single.

What was the first piece of music you heard this morning after rolling out of bed?

“Tycho – A Walk”  – I love this band!

Exciting days for you right now with your new track ‘Big Bang’ flying high. Please talk us through the history and sound of the track…

Yes, I am definitely happy at how well it’s doing! It’s the life in Color (LIC) Anthem so it had to be something Big!! I spoke with Borgeous as I know he likes Big Room tracks and we just got to work. I think the outcome was perfect for what LIC wanted and the song seemed to fit the party very well.  Everyone was happy especially the fans which is what matters most.

Can you remember where you first time you road-tested the track – did you know you were sitting on something very special

Yes, I was actually in Chile doing a couple shows. I decided to play it out and the crowd reaction was just amazing! It was that moment that I knew we had something big and that it was going to do very well.

Miami Week must seem like a distant memory now. Some artists are coming back exclaiming it the best ever, some are saying there was no industry there and so no business got done…which was ultimately the main reason this event started so long ago. What was your take on it?

It definitely felt a little different than the past times there. A lot smaller and less parties but that’s not necessarily a bad thing… The quality was there. I feel like the last two years it was oversaturated and a lot of promoters and labels lost money or had unsuccessful events. This year the parties seemed to be more packed, the lineups were full and well thought out. I had a great time!

What are some of the highlights of the Week – parties, tunes, DJs…?

I think the Charity Events are some of the most underrated at WMC. I was part of a Golf Tournament organized by Life In Color and Disco Donnie. That was  the biggest highlight for me. It was a  cool way to interact with fans and DJ’s. It wasn’t just drinks and music. It was real interaction and I made some good friends and relationships in this. Not to mention this was for a good cause raised money for a great charity. I’m DEFINITELY doing it again next year.

If it wasn’t for a shattering knee injury you my son could have made as a soccer player. For all the British and European football fans reading this, just how important is the sacred game in the States? How much of an impression has the likes of David Beckham, Tim Cahill and Robbie Keane made…will it ever be a major sport there?

Well, unfortunately, I don’t think it will ever match the attention that American Football or Basketball has in the US but I do think it’s grown tremendously and its still growing. It’s really cool to see guys from the European leagues coming to retire here like Tierry Henry, Kaka amongst many others. I think this really helps the sport.

Tell us about your show you played at half time for the Real Madrid v Chelsea football match in Miami…

Oh man, where do I even begin!  Till this day, this was probably the most epic show I’ve ever done. It was definitely a dream come true. I was able to perform in the same place as Cristiano Ronaldo and all the stars on these teams on the same night. I even saw a small highlight of my DJ set on Fox Soccer Channel, which was so humbling and crazy! I’ll never forget that feeling.

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend, please give us a few words on each…

“Big Bang” – David Solano , Borgeous

Massive song for the big crowds and it’s my song

“Take me Away” – David Solano

This is my next release, and it plays out incredible. It comes out May 25 on W&W’s label, Mainstage. It’s my surprise track for the fans in the show.

“Booty Bounce” – Tujamo

This song just seems to work everywhere (Clubs , small venues , massive festivals). I love what Tujamo has done lately. Big props to him!

“Temper” – D.O.D

Another great Producer and even better person. Dan has made an amazing tune here! I love playing this one and fits very well in my sets.

“Darkside” – Firebeatz

Amazing song! Nice balance between Aggressive and Deep. I love what Firebeatz are doing today and mazing guys as well.

And an early tip for a summer anthem?

I have two massive vocal records coming soon. Hopefully I’ll get them out on time to make them summer anthems.

What are the plans for this year for one the craziest parties on the planet?

Just keep touring the world and making people dance and smile!

What is your favourite ever story from this insane paint and dance music event?

Probably doing their first show at Ultra Music Festival 5 years ago. That was just a day we will always remember. Crazy little tent but absolutely packed from start to finish. It was a big landmark for myself and for the guys at LIC.

The 3 bucket list adventures you wanna do in your lifetime…

Burning Man –  I’ve been wanting to attend to this event for many years always miss it because of scheduling reasons but I have feeling this could be the year!

Shark Diving – I’m scared as hell of sharks but they are also my favorite animal, so I kind of like this combination and I’m always trying to overcome my fears, so I think this is a must in my life

Win a Grammy

An up and coming producer to watch out for in 2015?

D.O.D and Jetfire .  I think this guys  are going to have a big year

An album in your collection we’d be surprised to know about?

Alt J – This Is All Yours

And finally, what is coming out studio wise from you next?

Well next month is my next release, “Take me Away” it’s coming out on W&W’s label “Mainstage” and also I have two gems and I’m hoping to get out before the summer ends.
