After hours grooving…

AFRO COALITION, a collective of DJs, producers and promoters from the North of England select their Top 20 Back To Mine ahead of their 3rd birthday and Peven Everett’s return to Leeds.

EUAN MITCHELL

Fat Freddy’s Drop – Flashback
Got into these guys after hearing them live at The Roundhouse, lotta love for Aotearoa this version is perfect for the wind down.

Sir Piers ft. Monique Bingham – Don’t You Love Me
One of the best soulful house tracks ever written, still gives me goose bumps – Monique is sublime on this.

Thee Maddkatt Courtship III – My Life Muzik

Came across this thanks to the Playmusic lads record shop in Leeds – nostalgia for wax and what was probably my favourite era for clubbing and music up North.

Alive – Skindo Le Le
Pure joy on this record, impossible not to smile when she breaks into the chorus. Discovered this gem at an after party for proper house heads.

Kyoto Jazz Massive – Mind Expansions
The pads on this take me back to being 12 years old and messing around with synths in the local music shop – I had no idea back then I’d find so much good music with them on.

DEAN CREOLE

Naked Music NYC – If I Fall
First heard this a good few years back when I first discovered the mushroom jazz mixes by Mark Farina. It’s got a 90’s RnB summer vibe to it, love it.

Kruder & Dorfmeister – High Noon‪
I’ve again got Mark Farina to thank for this one, as I heard it on one of his Mushroom Jazz mixtapes. Hazy downtempo vibes.

Moodyman – U Ranaway
I’ve always loved Moodyman and this track is quintessential Moodyman for me.

Taana Gardner – Heartbeat (Club Version)
The bass riff on this tune is just too good.

Daft Punk – Phoenix
One of the best tracks from their debut album “Homework” There’s some real gems on that particular album, including this one. French House at its absolute best.

MALCOLM WE LOVE

Kerri Chandler – Rain (AtjazzRemix)
It’s pure class from the off.  Jazzy hats n snares, skip through until almost secret sub bass creeps up in a crescendo of Atjazz’s version of another rich chord classic sound!!! Always in the box and rocks every crowd young, old, big clubs and ‘lil get togethers.

SALSOUL ORCHESTRA – Ooh I Love It Love Break (Original Shep Pettibone 12′ Remix)
I love Philly! The Roots, Jazzy Jeff, Jill Scott… This record contains all of the elements I cannot recreate digitally.  Vocals in chorus, real super rich strings and sharp brass section. It’s like they’re a funk carnival, with tons of musicians and dancers filling up the stage with colour and sound.

Janet Jackson – If (Kaytranada Remix)
Her vocals are light n smoky and he kills it with a deep low padded b-line. He’s actually breaking down a few of these “mini” genres (for me anyway) where this un-quantized Dilla-esque drum programming and raw bass bridge everything from hip hop through to (the new) deep house and it’s full of soul.

Faze-O – Ridin’ High
The chimes over the chords with that spacey effect makes it all dreamy. I always love those “jive talk” lyrics of this type of 70s funk “I want to take you on a love high!”, wonderful! I think, I may have heard the break on EPMDs “Please Listen to my Demo” first.

Roy Ayers – Brand New Feeling
The B side to “Searchin”, Merry Clayton sounds so sexy, wailing in pure abandonment to the classic Roy Ayers chords. I could never get bored of this and always listen through until the end.

SY LEGG

North End – Kind Of Life (MAW Remix)
Heard this track back in 1997 and immediately fell in love with it. It’s just a perfect example of how a remix should be. Full of texture, drive, rhythm and it’s got an amazing warm bass line. Play it out on a big system and it becomes a monster

Universal Robot Band – Barely Breaking Even
This is Leeroy Burgess classic track remixed by a disco legend John Morales” it oozes funk, soul, disco and jazz. It’s a right track that could be played at any point in a set. Drop it and watch the room move

2 Puerto Ricans a Black Man And A Dominican – Do it properly
I chose this track as a it’s a complete monster of a tune. I Played it recently at a hacienda party as my last tune and it smashed the floor. In fact it always smashes the floor and it’s always in the box

Nuyorican Soul  – I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun
Louie Vega, Kenny Dope, Jocelyn Brown and Vincent Montanna Jr – Quite simply an epic piece of music and I never tire of listening to this track .

Stevie wonder – As
I chose this record as this in my opinion anyway is the greatest piece of music ever made. Every time I play it I get goose bumps all over… Nothing more needs to be said about it”
