Back To Mine with Nils Penner

One of the coolest after hours selection’s of the year

01. Lambchop – Under The Dream Of A Lie
For me personally one of the best songs ever written. There is everything in it. It is somehow happy and sad, bright and darkOne of the co…and all the instruments and melodies are woven into one great ensemble in a perfect way.

02. Bruce Springsteen – Working On A Dream
Goosebumps all over…everytime…can’t help it. “To bring down the power of the music on ya’…“

03. Billy Joel – New York State Of Mind (live)
Now can it get any more beautiful cliché than this one? What would I give  – I don’t know to witness the piano man himself play this in a dark cellar jazz club cool as cool can be.

04. Gil Scott-Heron & Amnesia Express – The Bottle (live)
I had the luck to ‘grow up’ in a discotheque where the DJ/Owner of the club had an idea about being a teaching DJ to the crowd and a background of a roundabout 20000 Vinyl Records collection. Now when I started going there I really did not get for example this track. One of the songs he started playing like 5:30am in the morning. But the more I heard it and the more the teachings reached me it started to grow and grow on me and in the end years later I could not wait for the early morning hours when he picked the pearls of his collection … 20 minutes live version? 9am? He and we didn’t care… such good and valuable memories.

05. Al Di Meola & Paco de Lucía – Mediterranean Sundance
Talkin about absolute masters of their instrument and a beautiful song with this one. Sucking you in more and more. Of course the whole album is so worth taking the time and listening.
I have always wondered how it is socially much more ‘accepted’ and not questioned if somebody has like a library / reading room in his apartment or house while it is always strange to many people if you have a room just for listening to music while doing nothing else? i think it’s a weird perception by so many people that a book is considered somewhat culturally with a deeper level compared to an album…at least nowadays. So many people consume music just ‘one the side’ while doing something else. I think more people should take the time, sit down and just listen to any great album they like while doing nothing else.

06. Baby Washington – I’ve Got A Feeling
Grey Hangover Sunday…nothing better to get you moving than a little dirty real Old School Rhythm & Blues action…the list of songs to pick here is too long…I chose this one…

07. Moloko – Live At Pinkpop
One of the rare moments I listen to electronic music at home this is my go to concert. Moloko live at Pinkpop 2004…Great fusion of electronic music / elements of pop and just the right amount of weirdness.

08. SNFU – Painful Reminder
I spend a lot of my youth with let’s say ‘guitar based’ music. Punk, Hardcore and alternative stuff in general. A great band i saw live two times actually is SNFU and this is for me at last one of their greatest songs.

09. NoMeansNo – Now
Another from the golden Era of alternative guitar music. I cannot count the times I stumbled across the party ‘dancefloor’ to this great song.

10. Half Moon Run – Nerve
Thanks to my buddy Johnjon (thanks dude if you read this! I just recently discovered these guys. I am not exactly sure if they have an album out yet but there is this great BBC 1 session they recorded live. Their songwriting and instrumental skills are just incredible. Such great arrangements, changes of intensity and the overall feeling is so impressive …oh and where else have you ever seen a drummer playing keyboard while drumming!?
