Back To Mine with Steve Parry

After hours grooving with one of clubland’s all time greats

One of Liverpool’s most knowledgeable and finest DJs for many years, head honcho at SMP3 Music Management and co-owner of Selador Recordings with Dave Seaman. Here’s some rather wonderful ‘Back To Mine’ tunes selected for your delectation…

Tears For Fears – Pharoes

Tears For Fears were my favourite band when I was about 13. ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’ was one of my real faves… co-incidentally, if somehow I was listening to radio late at night, I often found myself fascinated by the Shipping Forecast, and I never knew why… It sounded a bit like nonsense, maybe? And so the first time I heard this, I was gobsmacked, because it kind of gels the two together in a chilled vibe. I love it!

Bjork – Play Dead

I know its trendy to be a high Bjork fan, but I’m not really, I like her, but I don’t go crazy over her like some people do. But, this tune… well, it just makes me smile every time I hear it. Pure class!

Beatles – While My Guitar Gently Weeps (LOVE version)

Being from Liverpool its almost the law that I include a Beatles track… I’ve been to see LOVE by Cirque Du Soleil twice and both times it’s made me well up, overcome with emotion. This version of ‘My Guitar Gently Weeps’ takes my breath away. It starts with the original demo that George made, and the strings were composed by George Martin for this album. The strings always take my breath away. It was also the album that was playing when my daughter was born as If I needed to cement any more emotion for this track!

FC Kahuna – Hayling

Downtempo, cool, a bit wonky and with an angelic vocal. What’s not to like?

Talk Talk – Life’s What You Make It (Ben Liebrand Mix)

I was always a fan of this track and this remix is great – simple and cool. The title of the track is pretty much my motto in life… and it was playing when my son was born, so its very special to me this.

Rolling Stones – Rain Fall Down (Ashley Beedle Re-Edit)

Uber cool, very funky and when I play it to people they are always amazed at this gem.

Blow Monkeys – La Passionara

I used to sit in a bedroom when I was about 15 and play this when it was on a B-side, and wonder if I was the only person in the world that loved it? Little did I know at the time that it was a Balearic anthem! Its funky and chunky, the guitar and those beats. Solid!

James Ingram – Yah Mo Be There (Jellybean Dub)

I was a big soul boy growing up, and I loved this track. I first heard this version around 1991, I think it was played in Shelly’s, and since then it’s been a big favourite of mine, and my friends, especially Les Calvert (a fellow DJ from Liverpool). I used to play it at after-parties and I remember Yousef running up and saying how much he loved it, so I made his day and gave him my spare copy.

Depeche Mode – All I Ever Wanted (Dominatrix Remix)

Some remixes of tracks completely change the vibe of a track. This is one of those… Unexpected, and sophisticated, and every time it gets to the chorus and Dave Gahan doesn’t sing it, but the backing singers do, it blows my little mind.

The Aloof – One Night Stand (Ashley Beedle remix)

The vocal, the haunting production… so cool! I suppose ‘epic’ kind of describes this best. Pure class from Mr Beedle!
