Shiftee’s Picks – Week 6

Boom! Two times DMC World Champion brings us his essential weekend tunes…

What did I do last weekend?

“I showed off Traktor at the annual IMSTA fest in NYC.  That’s Traktor, folks. Traktor.  I saw the Broadway show ‘Book Of Mormon’ by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Yes, it was funny. Yes, I laughed a lot.  Yes, I peed a little bit because of all the laughter. Yes, people noticed and made fun of me. Yes, I am still feeling deeply embarrassed by the whole incident.”

The Picks

Aurora J Young – Sugar Sweet (Shiftee Remix)
“An extremely handsome young producer named Shiftee delivers an intoxicating remix of on the rise songstress Aurora J Young. Shiftee, known for his muscles and crime fighting ability, looks deep into my soul on this one. It’s like we’re the same person.”

DiscoVision – Yoko Mono (Blaze Tripp Remix)
“Big Room Banger!  Digging a bunch of Blaze Tripp’s last few releases.  He comes heavy, but doesn’t sound overly derivative. Yoko Moan-o should be a pornstar’s name if it isn’t already.”

J-Sweet – Streethawk
“In case you haven’t noticed (it’s like we never talk anymore!), I’m all about grime these days.  Props to Slit Jockey for putting out this serious business business from the don J-Sweet. If at your church/temple/mosque/forest you pray for bass, this is probably what your messiah will deliver.”

Joker – My Trance Girl
“No one does it quite like Joker. As my homie Rx put it, his tracks are simultaneously extremely funky and extremely gangster.  Just like my dance moves. That’s right, I’m the Joker of dancing.”

Kid Koala – Recyclotron (Page 110)
“Kid Koala makes amazing music, not just amazing turntable music but amazing music. Quirky, soulful, cinematic, and stylistically coherent, Kid Koala has his own vision of the world. Here he not only plays it for us, but shows it to us in the companion book Space Cadet.  Recyclotron, I want to meet you.”

King Midas Sound – Earth a Kill Ya (Mala Remix)
“Mala is one of my favorite DJs. I love that he still uses vinyl and dubplates. His sets and overall vibe are spiritual. I don’t believe in a lot. I believe in pastrami. I believe in Thorlo socks. I believe in facial hair. And I believe in Mala.”

Kozzie – I’m Famous
“Kozzie rips it over the nasty Faze Miyake beat. This song is funny. Kozzie is so famous “he doesn’t buy clothes no more” “girls are like ‘that’s the guy from the YouTube’,” “your girl’s on [him].” He even thinks he should wear shirts that say he’s famous. I say go for it, Kozzie!”

Mali Lone – La Push
“I’m a big fan of Mali Lone. We played a show together in Canada and her whole set was just so on point and seamless. On the music side of things, the French producer has been dropping gem after gem. 80s dubstep smoove grooves! Smoove > Smooth.”

Monokle – Luch
“Beautiful, peaceful vibes from Monokle. When are monocles going to come back? Aren’t they the perfect fashion accessory for a gentleman/lady who needs to see well some of the time.  Monocle Movement 2012!”

Stinkahbell – Something In Your Eyes
“Stinkahbell be killing it. You can tell I mean it by my imperfect grammar. If I had said “Stinkahbell has been killing it,” then you would know I didn’t quite mean business. That being said: Awesomes dubsteps from a da Stinkahbell.  Drop be lush and hypnotical yo! By the way, would someone please help this person get whatever it is out of his/her eyes!?!?!? My baby making music pick of the week.”
