Ferry Corsten

The Full On Ferry fever continues

Welcome back to DMCWORLD Ferry, you have just returned from another massive weekend in America – tell us about Washington and your back to back marathon set…

“It was amazing! 7 hours back to back with Markus and a crowd that was fantastic! Really enjoyed every minute of the night.”

You love your back to back sets!

“I do, espeically at my night Full On where I play back to back sets with different DJs all night long. Full On nights are events where I can show a diversity of dance music by playing back to back with different artists/DJs from various genres the whole evening. Every artist has their own sound and style, playing together with each one can make the experience for us as artists and the crowd of course a lot of fun!”

You were one of the first producers to crack the States, what are your thoughts on this crazy EDM explosion taking place over there right now? Sander signing to Roc Nation, the Sensation brand being offered $100 Million dollars for a buy out, casinos paying five times the normal fees for DJs to spin in their clubs…is all this healthy or does it feel like an early burn out is on the cards before the scene has really got going over there…

“I think the explosion in the US is a good thing. I can see why you would say this is an early burn out but the people in the US are really excited about EDM and I can only see it getting bigger and bigger. This also means that more people are getting to know EDM and that more talents will rise up which also means more and better music, which in the end it is all about.”

You are back in the UK on Boxing Day to play at a massive Cream spectacular with Laidback Luke, Hardwell and Nicky Romero amongst others. Why do you think Cream is still one of the best clubs in the world? The parties just get better and better…

“Cream is a quality brand. There Is the reason why it’s been alive and kicking all these years! It’s nice to always be part of their events.”

What would be your perfect Christmas present this year?

“I don’t know, it’s supposed to be a surprise right?

What is the current top 5 you are spinning?

01. Ferry Corsten vs Markus Schulz – Stella

02. Festen – Give It To Them

03. Beat Service – Impulse

04. Dash Berlin feat. Kate Walsh – When You Were Around (Ferry Corsten Fix)

05. M.I.K.E. – Any Direction (M.I.K.E. vs Revero Club Edit)

Last month saw you deliver a mighty Full On ADE allnighter at Undercurrent in Amsterdam. Dance music conferences in general don’t work, Miami has developed into a big rave, IMS hasn’t really exploded as we all thought it would…what are the components that makes ADE the number one industry event around the world?

“I think the ADE is such a big success because it is a gathering of all the people in the industry who are there not just to party but also to talk business. For the fans it is great because pretty much every big artist out there is playing somewhere during the week. I guess there is something to do for everybpdy that likes EDM in general.”

I caught you on the Sean ‘Hollywood’ Hamilton radio show the other day. I was very interested in your comments comparing your Dutch fans with their American counterparts – you mentioned that whilst the American clubbers all want to shout the loudest, it’s not uncommon for the clubbers in the Netherlands to be standing at the bar nodding their heads all too cool for school? Why does that happen still?

“Dan I have no clue why this is still happening. People are just different in each country and I guess we just have to live with it!”

You also said in the interview that new DJs out there should “not be afraid to be different.” Is that a fault you think many of the new up and coming producers have who are coming through in 2012?

“We receive a lot of demos for my label Flashover Recordings and a lot of the tracks just sound like things done before which just isn’t interesting to listen to. I always try to tell people to be different and creative so they create things which sound fresh.”

You have had another mental summer playing the world’s finest festivals. What is your favourite festival story of the summer? Anything to compare with your famous Australian wheelchair story…?

“This summer was crazy. The festivals that really stand out for me are Tomorrowland and Global Gathering. The production of these shows was amazing and the crowds were really awesome. No wheelchair stories this time but I still really enjoyed the festivals this summer.”

What was your summer anthem?

“‘Not Coming Down’ which I did together with Betsie Larkin. Such great response by the crowd on this track.”

Who are the up and coming producers we should be looking out for in 2013?

“I think Shogun has had a really amazing 2012 and I am really looking forward to what he does in 2013.”

What are the plans for Full On in 2013?

“Last year Full On has made its debut in a lot of countries and in 2013 we want to expand this list. Each Full On show brings something special and the back to back sets are always so exciting and fun to do.”

What is coming out next from the Ferry studio…

“At the end of November the new mix compilation Once Upon A Night 3 is going to be released. The specific date is November 26 and the you can already pre order the album via my website and the iTunes store.”

Your radio show goes from strength to strength. Where is the most remote country that receives the Corsten Countdown?

“It depends where the planes of KLM are flying as they also broadcast the show in them!!”

And finally a question I asked Fatboy Slim in an interview last week. The last two years has seen a hell of a lot of 15/16 year old producers emerge from Europe and America who have a proper management team, PR company and touring people all controlling them before they have left school. When I interview them, the mere mention of drinking and partying gets them recoiling in horror at the mere thought of letting their hair down. What are your thoughts on the modern, teenage producer today and the fun they may never see in their careers just like the big DJs from back in the did enjoyed…? He answered…”You can’t talk the talk without walking the walk. I would advise all young DJs to explore getting as high as their audience to understand what the crowd want. Getting mashed in some shape or form is part and parcel of club culture and should be compulsory for all DJs before they get their public entertainment licence. For fuck’s sake let your hair down while you still have enough…” What are your thoughts on this matter?

“I get his point and on a level I agree. On the other hand, if your passion is creating music and you are good at it then I don’t see why you should first spend years being in the crowd before you can become a successful DJ. I haven’t spend all that much time clubbing myself really and yet I did pretty well myself I think.”
