The boys from Sweden making it feel so right out there…

Interview : Dan Prince

Love, Tim welcome to DMCWORLD, a massive new EP ‘Eden’ coming out from you guys with ‘Will It Ever Feel Alright’ smashing it’s way into the world famous Buzz Chart this week. You two got together after Tim moved to Copenhagen for studies and Love followed on. Tim – what were the studies you were doing, what was your life plan back then…?

Tim : “I moved to Copenhagen to start my architecture studies in 2009. The choice between Sweden and Denmark was easy since the architecture school in Denmark is located on an academy of arts compared to the Swedish technical direction. My plan was to be some kind of artist I suppose and use my architecture studies as a bridge to other worlds rather then being a stiff suit-chitect.”

‘Shards’ featured the beautiful vocals of Love’s sister, it sounds like you have come from a very musical family

Love: “My dad was a pop star in Denmark and had to cancel a tour due to an injury in his shoulder caused by screaming fans pulling him off the stage. Once my stepfather threw a bass guitar amplifier through the window, but the real genius is my sister Rebekka.”

What are your earliest memories of music?

Love & Tim : “In a quick brainstorming session, this is what came to mind. Not sure how and when though; Pet Shop Boys, Swedish soap opera “Tre Kronor” whistling anthem, Aqua, Scooter, Warp Brothers, Hanson and Swedish folksinger Cornelis Vreeswijk…”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

Gorgon City Featuring Yasmin – Real

Maya Jane Coles – Burning Bright

Maya Jane Coles – Burning bright (Franskild Remix)

Coni – Luz In Pool

Haim – Falling (Duke Dumont Remix)

How did the whole Sweat It Out! deal come about, what is it about this label you love?

“They are not stuck in any conventions and put out great pieces in a solid tempo. Also, not being a major record label makes it more personal. First dude to recognize our music was Adrian and he gave us such fantastic enthusiasm. We only got the pleasure to talk with him via email – R.I.P.”

Your music has been described as ‘haunting’, ‘beautifully unsettling’, ‘full of melody’, ‘a deep house version of The XX meets Royksopp’ but quite often critics pay homage to your love of early 80s house music. Who were some of the artists from that era you admire?

“It is hard to specify a certain artist or producer. What we find really interesting is the DIY vibe to the overall sound and movement of this era.”

How do you compliment each other in the studio, who excels where?

“Tim is the put buttons fella and Love has got a great sense of what should come next. But every part is an ever-flowing process where we have an ongoing discussion parallel to it. We basically sit there and tell each other when it feels good.”

Do you ever argue?

“Not really. Since we have the parallel discussion we are either disagreeing or agreeing and work from there. If something doesn’t fit for some reason or for someone, we work it out so it feels good for both of us. It is very constructive.”

What is coming out next release wise, we hear another EP is brewing…?

Yes we just released our second EP Eden on SIO! And have a couple of very interesting remixes in the pipeline and then a third EP this autumn.”

What is the best and worst thing about living in Copenhagen – Noma and Mother must make it quite worthwhile on the food front?

Food is good and beer is cheap. It’s has a great acceptance and encouragement for creativity in Copenhagen. The winters are too cold though.”

Not many people know this, but Franskild are really good at…?

Love: “Tim is one of the best dancers I know.”

Tim: “Love is one of the best dancers I know.”

A famous quote from you… “since as long as we could remember we’ve been fascinated by the fact that sound and melody have such a great impact on people, that it could mean so much, create strong feelings and even affect us physically and in fact change peoples lives.” What 1 song for each of you has had the biggest impact on your life?

“Rather then one song it would probably be the whole album “You’ve Come A Long Way Baby” by Fatboy Slim.”

Who are some of the modern day musicians that you find inspiring?

“Girls with power…”

Who is the person from history you would most like to have a beer with and why?

“Some uncomplicated guy from the middle ages would be nice. Preferably a Viking with questionable sexual preferences and a big love for gardening instead of plundering…well ok, that sounds complicated…but very nice…”

And finally, what advice can you give to our readers wanting to follow in your footsteps as musicians…?

“Work hard in every aspect of your career. It is not enough to make a couple of songs. Invite people and turn the project into something that is bigger then music.  Always have fun for real.”
