Ibiza 2014 – Davide Squillace

DC10 goes Circo Loco with the This And That main man

Interview by Jack Docherty

Davide welcome back to DMCWORLD, wow what a summer you have had in Ibiza – it’s nearly Closing Party time…how do you feel?

“At the beginning of the summer, before the season starts, you wait and wait – really eager for it to begin. It’s all very exciting. Then towards the end you think, ah, maybe I need a rest now! Then it’s back to the studio.”

Please can you explain to our readers around the world who have not had the fortune to have experienced it, just why Circo Loco is not only the best club night in Ibiza, but also the world…

“It’s such a fantastic event, in the crowd you might have bankers from Wall Street, school teachers, students or cleaners. At Circo Loco they are all the same, all having a great time, in the same place, dancing to music together.”

At the start of the season you were asked by a journalist what you were expecting from the summer in Ibiza. You replied that you were “anxious to listen to new, interesting DJ sessions”. So, who impressed you DJ wise this year in the white isle?

“It’s hard to say, there have been so many people that impressed me, it’s hard to say one without missing somebody else. I don’t think I could pick out a single artist!”

The last week of August saw you star at the Traktor private villa party alongside some guys called Carl Craig and Luciano. Tell us about that day in the sunshine…

“It was fantastic because it wasn’t just a product promotion that was being sold to people out of the blue. It was showcased as part of the event for people to enjoy and get used to while having fun.”

What are your 3 biggest tunes of Ibiza 2014…

These are all quite different and have regularly found themselves being worked into my sets…”

Tiga vs Audion – ‘Fever’

Claude VonStroke – ‘Can’t Wait’ (VonStroke’s Where’s Kenny? Remix)

Butch & C.Vogt – ‘The Infamous’ (Robytek Vs Shield Cut)

What are the next release plans for your label ‘This and That’?

“Well, we had string of tracks where we spent a lot of time on promotion, videos and things like that to make each track it’s own project. We now have plans to strip back the process and get some consistent output, maybe every 6 weeks or so we’d be looking to release a track digitally, this way is a lot more simple and keeps it fresh for the people who like what we do.”

Ibiza made the news for all of the wrong reasons in July when Steve Angello, Paul Oakenfold and Afrojack were interviewed on Radio 1 claiming that Ibiza had become too expensive, too VIP and had lost it’s mystique. Most of us who live on the island have different opinions on this, what’s yours…?

“That’s crazy! It seems funny to me that those guys would say something like that. They are the kind of artists that draw in the big VIP crowds willing to spend lots of money in Ibiza, but it’s not all like this. It’s expensive, don’t get me wrong, but there’s something for everyone.”

Paris Hilton earning $200,000 a pop at Amnesia. Thoughts…

“I think there is room for everyone here. As long as she comes with respect, and has the interests of the island at heart and not just hers, then there’s no problem.”

It didn’t escape our attention that Madonna partied at DC10 this summer, what are your thoughts on the likes of Madge, Kanya West, Rihanna and Justin Beiber partying here?

“Like I said, there is room for everyone! As long as they come to the island without trying to negatively impose on people who know and love Ibiza then there is no reason why we can’t all share this great place. There’s a lot for people to see here, so people shouldn’t be upset by someone else’s presence. They are here because of years of people’s hard work making this a fantastic island to visit.”

Another great quote from you this summer…” Mainly I like staying home by the swimming pool with my friends, chatting, playing and making noise. However there are plenty of undiscovered gems here and there on the island, hidden spas and unknown restaurants that will keep you busy for decade.” What gems have you discovered this summer?

“Although I am keen to discover gems, I have been coming here for many years…and it’s not THAT big haha! I think I’ve now found all the best places, but will be visiting them again and again.”

What has been your best festival experience of the year?

“We Are FSTVL and SW4 were great, I had loads of fun playing these shows. It’s very different to club sets as you can get away with playing something a bit different. There’s a difference between going to the studio after a club show with a certain idea in your head, and coming back from multiple festival shows and having all this different inspiration to make unusual tracks based on certain moments you’ve experienced at various places.”

You have been touring these past few months with Martin Buttrich and Matthias Tanzmann on the Better Lost Than Stupid Tour. Who has been the biggest party animal on tour?

“Haha! I’d have to say it was a close call between me and Martin, one of us is usually the last man standing…”

We loved your ’14,000km Away’ track you created with the guys…what can you tell us about the new Cadenza EP you are behind…

“Ah, sometimes I find it hard to describe the music as it can be so closely connected to a feeling. But I will say there are some interesting ideas on this record. I’m learning to play piano at the moment, so that will certainly be a part of the final EP.”

Who has been the best guest at Circo Loco this summer?

“Again, very hard to say exactly as there’s been so many amazing artists passing through. But someone in particular who sticks in my mind was Black Coffee. He had a fantastic selection that was an amazing blend of hard-hitting tracks and the right level of pop influence to really get people going.”

How can you compare Circo Loco 2013 to 2014…has it improved?

“I think that it comes down to the new talent that’s coming through year on year. As well as the returning heroes, there’s so much new music every year and this keeps things really fresh at Circo Loco time and time again.”

And finally…your new studio is nearly complete…what are your goals for 2015…

“At the moment it’s still in the final stages of coming together, with everyone involved having such busy careers, it takes time to bring people together regularly and focus on the project. But it will be done soon. I personally have plans to release 4 tracks myself next year, one every quarter. On top of that I’m also going back to an old project I started when I was 20, something a bit different and experimental, more details on that to come!”
