Krafty Kuts

Boom! Exclusive interview with the DMC Champ ahead of his big London show

Martin welcome back to DMCWORLD. You are bang in the middle of your Bang The Underground Canadian Tour, Whistlercoming up tomorrow and then Winnipeg…tell us about the night in Invermere…pretty cool huh?

“Hey Dan. I  love playing the small towns they really let loose and have fun and also it means so much to them that it adds that little more spice to the night. The place was packed and just got better and better, every tune got a cheer and at the end of the night it took ages to leave as the crowd was so pumped.”

How do the Canadian clubbers differ from the US clubbers at the moment. Are you finding the Canadians more in tune with their music?

“I think the USA is in the middle of an incredible rise in big DJ’s and electronic music. The crazy parties and big events make it is hard to go on tour on your own around the USA and pull big crowds as there is just a ridiculous amount of competition in every city. Canada is more about the club scene and a few big festivals so the whole superstar DJ phenomenon is less apparent. Both countries have different vibes and are into different sounds I think and the whole Dubstep movement is massive in the states where as Canada has it’s own scene making it just as unique.”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

     1. Calvertron & Krafty Kuts – Drop – Instant Vibes
     2. Krafty Kuts – Monkey Dance (Ed Solo Remix) – Instant Vibes
     3. Jay Robinson Ft Stereo MC’s & Baby Bam – Work It (Marten Horger Remix) – Instant Vibes
     4. Plump DJ’s – A Hip House Experiment – Grand Hotel
     5. TC – Do You Rock
     6. DJ Icey – Bass Up
     7. Foreign Beggars & Knife Party – Apex (Dirtyphonics Remix)
     8. Bobby C Sound TV – Papa Grande
     9. Excision & Downlink – Crowd Control (Delta Heavy Remix)
   10. Featurecast – Give It To You

October 6th sees you back on British shores hosting ‘An Evening With Krafty Kuts’ at Cable in London, it will be almost eleven months to the day since you smashed all bar and attendance records at the venue. Well where do we start this time round? Tell us about the A. Skillz. TrickaTechnology set to begin with…

“Basically it is us just playing our favourite records in our own unique way slicing through genres old & new with Dynamite MC adding the extra flavour. We have always loved working together and when we DJ it is just about getting the crowd hyped with loads of exclusive edits, acapellas, scratching and all our skills rolled into a short space of time. We are hitting the studio heavy over the next few months working on a new EP and new set. Cable is a great club with an awesome sound system so our music will work perfectly and the vibe is incredibly intense so we expect nothing  but another banger of a night.”

You also have a huge DMC favourite in one of our World Champions – DJ Cash Money flying in from America. What are ya expecting from this superstar on the night?

“He has always been an incredible DJ who rocks the crowd like no other. Him and Jazzy Jeff are the 2 DJ’s that got me into Hip Hop & Dj-ing and without them I would not be doing what I love. He is a massive inspiration and never fails to deliver with his amazing skills so I expect something special and I hear he has been working with Marvelous again his old MC which is an added bonus.”

The evening doesn’t stop there, the ‘DJs DJ’ Far Too Loud is in the house, Deekline, Ed Solo and Marten Horger will also be rocking the floor –  as will the Infrared and Jalapeno & Ghetto Funk crews. Tell us what you are excited about in rooms 2 and 3…

“Featurecast is hosting his LP launch in room 2 and he is another incredibly talented DJ & producer, bouncing around different genres I always enjoy his sets. Deekline & Ed Solo offer there funky jump up booty bass flavour while Marten Horger has just been on fire recently with his bass heavy production and killer dj sets. Far Too Loud has been dropping some belters and I watched him at Boomtown on the Arcadia stage and he was outstanding. The Infrared label will bring in some new & old talent showcasing some future Bass flavours so I think the whole night has a great selection of artists.”

What are your thoughts on the state of clubbing in the UK in 2012? Why have we so few clubs compared to the masses of incredible clubs around the world?

“To be honest nothing has really changed for me. I am still spinning every week in Bristol, Brighton, Manchester, Southampton, Exeter & London maybe slightly less in Nottingham, Leeds, Liverpool but each city has certain styles that work really well but the big Uni places seem to work good for me. I think it has definitely changed a little in the sense that the USA has a massive DJ culture now and loads of UK acts are spending a lot of time there but the UK still has some of  the most amazing & unique Festivals like Bestival, Boomtown, Glade & Kendal Calling. Which is maybe why the club scene is not as busy as it was.”

What has been your anthem of the summer?

Bingo Players – Lamour (Krafty Kuts Edit) A cheeky rewwork I did which basicaly destroys.

A big summer of festivals, where has stood out for you in 2012? What has been the craziest moment?

“Boomtown on the Arcadia Stage with Dynamite MC and 5000 people was outstanding. I have never scene a stage like it in my life it is like something out of War Of The Worlds …. epic and the crowd just got bigger & bigger the vibe was unreal and the stage was just nothing like you can imagine.”

What was the craziest outfit you saw at Bestival?

“Too many to mention Dan. It was craziness.”

What new up and coming DJs/producers have you spotted on your world travels this year?

“Funkanomics from Austria are great, Samplogy from Australia is wicked and off course Lady waks from Russia and Marten Horger (Germany) still smashing in the respected countries.”

What is the most expensive piece of equipment in your studio?

“Just building a new one now so that is a question I cannot answer as I am in the process of buying loads of new stuff.”

It’s the DMC World DJ Championships next weekend – do you still keep an eye on the biggest DJ competition in the world?

“Off course it’s where I started and without this competition I still believe I would not be doing what I do now. Having watched so many talented DJ’s over the years and learnt techniques and styles it has helped me become a better DJ.”

Who do you think has been the greatest champ we have ever had?

“The Scratch Pickles Q-Bert, Mixmaster Mike and Apollo but as an individual ~I think …..Cash Money for what he did at the time it was incredible.”

Which country around the world do you always love returning to, where gives you the best reception?

“Australia & Canada are just outstanding places to visit and play at they really just no how to party and just get wild.”

And finally, what is coming next from the Krafty Kuts studio…?

“Loads of new A.Skillz & Krafty stuff collabs with Marten Horger, Calvertron and stax of releases on Instant Vibes …. good times ahead indeed !!!!”
