Luna City Express

Getting set for the Moon Harbour 15th Anniversary Tour in London next weekend

Interview by Rob Chadwick

Welcome to DMCWORLD…how has summer been for you guys?

Marco: Summer has been great. Too bad it’s already over. We played a couple of nice gigs in Ibiza like at Ants and Blue Marlin as well as some nice festivals in and outside of Germany. We’re already looking forward to next summer.

Have you ever fallen out over all these years? What keeps you so close?

Norman: We know each other since 15 years and we also do music together for that long. Obviously the music plays an important role in our life but our friendship keeps us close as well. We both also have kids and love to spend time together with our families.

Who does what in the studio and DJ booth?

Marco: Our studio routine hasn’t really changed over the years. We are doing almost everything together in my studio. Collecting sounds, creating ideas, arranging the tracks and so on. I have more audio engineering skills than Norman and take care of all the technical parts of the production like external routing, mixing and stuff.

What’s it been like being with Moon Harbour for 15 years? How important has that been?

Marco: 15 Years of Moon Harbour means for us working for already 10 years with the label and its agency. It all started 2005 with our “Fresh” EP. We have released most of our productions on the label as well as our album “Hello From Planet Earth”. Altogether pretty much formed Luna City Express and has apparently been very important for us.
Norman: Time flies and we are still happy to be part of it!

Whats the boss like, does he give you feedback on music, is he a fun guy on tour?

Both: No comment. Ha ha!
Norman – It’s always fun to travel and play together with him, even though it doesn’t happen that often.
Marco: Matthias isn’t the fastest in giving feedback, but when it comes to it then he’s very honest and gives us some professionell and useful input.

What have been your personal favourite moments over the last 15 years, any key releases or tracks you are most proud of?

Norman: Our favourite moment was definitely the release of our album in 2009! Key releases on Moon Harbour were for us releases like Marlow’s “Quiet” and Matthias Tanzmann’s “Bulldozer”.

You are also on a 10 Years of Hudd Traxx comp – what the relationship with the label like there? How did you first hook up?

Norman: We got a remix request in 2011 from Eddie Leader (he runs the label) for the “Little Fritter” EP and after that we stayed in contact until today. Last year he asked us if we’re up to do something for the 10th anniversary compilation of the label and we’re glad to be a part of it.

Same deal with The Pearl Cube – you have a track on there, right? Do you make music specifically for all these labels, do you tailor your sounds to their styles?

Marco: That’s right. We always have a couple of tracks that we’re working on. If we get requests like this we send some ideas and the label(s) can choose what they like and we finish it.

How important do you think compilations like this are? Do you buy many yourselves?

Marco: Anniversary compilations are very important for labels. It’s like a current statement of the label which represents all artists of the label. We don’t make any difference between buying single tracks or compilations or albums. If the music is good we will buy and play it.

You play a secret gig in London on October 9th – tell us about that, how do you like playing in the capital?

Norman: It will be one of the 15 Years of Moon Harbour showcases with a great line up and the whole crew… Actually we don’t know the place yet, but we’re really looking forward to playing there with the gang! It’s always fun to play in London or somewhere else in UK. But especially London has this special vibe and nightlife. We love it and cant wait to be back!
