Paul Oakenfold

The legend releases his new album showcasing two of the most important destinations on planet dance

Interview : Dan Prince

Hey Paul, welcome back to DMCWORLD. The last time we spoke you were about to travel to Scotland to meet the teenager who created the video for ‘Who Do You Love’. How did that go, he has quite a future…

“HI Dan yes, Morgan Spence – what a talent. Was such a pleasure meeting him and his parents in Glasgow. His stop-animation is incredible – and his attention to detail when it comes to telling a story – is something else. We took Morgan and his folks out on a big night out – Scotland style – I think they ended up staying out at the venue longer than us?? It was great being able to play the record and have the crowd react as Morgan was looking on with a big smile on his face. And remember – he was a teenager when the video came out but when he started working on it he was only twelve. A kid making movies like that….wow – what a career he could have. Keep watching for his name.”

Gotta ask you this Oaky. The journalist Drew Millard’s interview with you that he is calling ‘The Worst Interview of All Time’ has obviously done the global rounds. One of his final questions was…’

How many interviews have you done in your life do you think?

…to which you answered…

“Too fuckin’ many. I hate interviews. I’m sorry. But I do.”

Now Paul, was that because this guy was asking you about your mobile phone and whether you followed Cher on Twitter, or are interviews a real pain the arse for you? I need know!!!

“Dan, It all depends on the quality and variation of the questions.”

Well a massive new album is swinging our way on August 9th, ‘We Are Planet Perfecto, Vol 3 – Vegas To Ibiza’. There isn’t an artist on the planet who has been more instrumental to the development of the scenes in both Vegas and Ibiza, did you feel any extra pressure on you with delivering this album?

“There were pressures to deliver the finished album by the deadline but I don’t think there were any pressures when it came to the tracklist. I didn’t feel under any pressure to conform with anyone else’s perception of those two destinations but my own to be honest.”

Tell us on the journey you wanted to create with this mix…

“As you said Las Vegas and Ibiza have played major roles in my life and I’ve done albums based in each in the past – so this was an opportunity to celebrate both on one album and to create a tracklist that reflected the sound I tend to play at each.”

You were the first international DJ to have a residency in Vegas, with your long running Planet Perfecto parties at Rain housed inside the Palms Casino complex. Did you really have a vision that Las Vegas could be what it is today…the busiest city for clubbing around the globe?

“Absolutely. There was never any doubt.”

How much of a musical knowledge do the crowds in a pool in Vegas dancing to the likes of Avicii and yourself actually have, are they there for the just the party or is music key to them?

“The people at the pool are the same clubbers that come to the gigs at night. It might be a slightly more party orientated vibe but that’s probably due to the fact you’re round a pool with the sun shining – and not in a dark club where your focus is directed more to the music maybe”

Do the territories in America change crowd wise and what music they appreciate? For instance, could you play the same set in LA that you would in Chicago?“That’s an interesting question. There are some cities that I play in the US who want to hear more trance and there are some that want more big room electro house so yes, touring those cities multiple times gives you the background you need to be able to predict want might work and what maybe wouldn’t.”

The Ibiza season is in full swing again, you’ve already flown in for dates at Pacha and Amnesia – safe to say these are your two favourite clubs on the island?

“I have a special bond with each of them.”

Did you have a chance to have a look around at any of the other nights on the island?

“Yes – normally when I come to the island I stay for a few weeks, play a few shows and then have some down time to catch up with friends on the island. Ibiza comes alive in the summer but there are still so many beautiful spots where you can hide away and relax.”

What’s your vibe of Ibiza in 2013, still got that magic?

“She never lost it.”

I have my dad arriving in Ibiza later today, this is the first time he has set foot on the island since your infamous birthday party in the late 80s. What are your Ibiza survival tips I can suggest to him?

“Embrace it.”

This is the first time the top three teams in the Premiership have gone into a new season with all teams having a new manager. Your beloved Chelsea sees the prodigal son returning, happy to see Jose back?

“I’m really interested to see how this plays out. Of course I hope he will have nothing but success!”

What is the current top 5 you are spinning…

Paul Oakenfold & J Hart “Touched By You” (Mike Hawkins remix)

Alex Metric & Jacques Le Cont ft Malin “Safe With You” (Dub mix)

Justin Oh “Sinsa” (Eshericks remix)

Simon Patterson “Contraband” (Blazer remix)

Alex Kunnari “Lifter” Maison & Dragen Remix

Where have been some of the stand out gigs for you recently, you are loving Pacha Buenos Aries right now!

“I’ve just got back from my Latin America tour which was amazing. Buenos Aires has always been my favourite city in the world to visit so yes Pacha was very special. But all the gigs were amazing on the tour – it was such a great adventure. When you get into the rhythm of life in Latin American it makes it very hard to leave and come home. Three weeks of touring was not enough – next year it needs to be longer!!”

And finally, the DJ MAG 100 Poll is on us again, nice little trailer for the Vote Oakenfold campaign! Glad to see you not taking these things to seriously eh…?

“I don’t know what you’re talking about mate???? – Which trailer?”
