Wayne & Woods

The new Size Records duo speak exclusively to DMCWORLD as ‘Jumangee’ goes massive

Interview : Dan Prince

Simon, Iman welcome to DMCWORLD. Where in the world are you right now?

Yo Dan! Right now we are in our studio in Stockholm!”

Few partnerships have the history that you two have. Most producers meet each other in clubs and go onto form an artist act. You two however have known each other since you were six years old although it wasn’t until your teens that music brought you together. What are your earliest musical memories from your childhoods?

It was a small festival in our neighborhood that always played dance music that we always went to. ‘DADY DJ’ is one of the tracks we remember. Great memories ha ha ha!”

It appears you are from the neighbourhood that is to music what Hollywood is to the film world. Solna which is a suburb of Stockholm has brought us Angello, Ingrosso and AN21…why though did you want to become spinners…?

Iman : “I’m not a control freak but in a weird way I loved to have control over the music that was playing in our discos when we were kids…if that makes sense ha ha!”

Simon : It all started when AN21 started his career playing in clubs like Solidaritet and I wanted to be able to go up there and make a guest mix! Ha ha! So I bought my first CDJs and started to mix tracks!”

Where were the early clubs you started to party at?

Iman : “I started to DJ in a club that was located in a subway station in Stockholm when I was 17. My rider was 1 Red Bull ha ha! I played everything from hip hop to techno but the promoter hated house music, so I got there a little earlier and started playing house music, then switched to hip hop as soon he got there ha ha…”

Simon : “We have a street called Stureplan and all the clubs are in that area, so I was all around those places…”

What was your first break into the music industry?

“We’ve had a couple of release before but we must say ‘Jumangee’. The support from all of these big DJs has been amazing and we are super happy about the track!”

What is the best piece of advice Steve Angello has ever given to you?

“His biggest advice was simple. Never stop making music.”

What did your families think of your choice of career?

Iman : “My parents wanted me to be a Doctor, but when they saw the time and passion I put into the music they understood and I got the full support from them all, which is a big motivation for me!”

Simon : “I’ve always had full support from my family, so pretty much the same…”

So 2013, a massive year for you and you have the dancefloors jumping around like lunatics right now thanks to your Wayne & Woods vs Henrix ‘Jumangee’ track out now on Size Records. Talk us through how this hook up with the Miami superstar happened?

Iman : “We had a track that we gave out for free on Christmast Eve called ‘Pyramid’ and Henrix tweeted us saying it was dope and that he liked it.”

Simon “Yeah so we started talking on Skype and decided to do a track together. A couple of days later we had ‘Jumange’!”

Did you know on completion you had created something very special?

“We felt it was pretty special straight away, especially with the African chants in the break.”

Has it been frustrating biding your time to unleash your music to the world?

“Yeah to be honest it was very frustrating just because we had so much music that we wanted to put out. We learnt that good things comes to those that wait, but better things come to those who are patient.”

Tell us about your studio set up, who excels where, who brings what to the table…?

“We have a studio that we go to when we have the time, otherwise we do everything on our laptops at home. Two Macbook pros, one with Ableton and one with Logic, we feed everything in on one computer and start to work. It’s different every time. And Dan, we work as a team.”

And any plans to add to the set up?

“You can always add new toys to the studio but we think that we need new monitors after yesterday’s session ha ha…”

Do you ever argue?

“Yes of course, if we didn’t argue we wouldnt be this close.”

What is the greatest record you have played to a dancefloor?

“Wayne & Woods – ‘ID’. We can’t tell you about this track because it’s not out yet. Also a track that always works is ‘Jungle Blood’ with Erick Morillo, Harry Romero, Jose Nunez, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano!”

Who are some of the producers you are giving high fives to right now?

“Steve Angello, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano and Alesso.”

Where have been some of the great stand out gigs for you recently?

“Edinburgh for sure! That party was on another level…so much energy and love…words can’t describe the feeling we had that night!”

And finally, where is the dream gig you are waiting for out there…?

“Green Valley in Brazil, Ushuaia in Ibiza and Ultra Music Festival Miami.”
