Riven

Luxembourg’s Thierry Loesch aka Riven, is top of his game when it comes to creating deep, underground house music. With the launch of his ace new Acid Break EP on Lauter unfug,  his homegrown joint label venture with  Alex Heide, Pierre Bellion and Alberto Stocco – Ratha Gud checks in..

Hi Thierry, welcome to DMC world.. Where are you in the world right now?

Hey Guys, thank´s for the interview, I´m at home getting ready for my gig in Berlin this weekend.

What was the first piece of music you heard today?

It´s still pretty early, I think some Modern Talking just played on the radio.

How would you describe your sound?

Tech House with a twist.

What first turned you on to making electronic music?

Traveling! I figured that your options and chances of being booked abroad increase if you have your own productions.

You’re new ‘Acid Break EP ‘ is dropping on Lauter Unfug this week, tell us a bit about the release and how it was made?

The release was made in my home studio using mostly analogue gear and my sampler. It´s actually been made more than one year ago but you know how much time it takes to get a track out.

You’ve got Timid Boy, Tyree Cooper and Andrew Martin as featured remixers, are you pleased with the results?

Very happy! I´ve been a big fan of Tyree since ever, I adore Timid Boys style and Andrew Martin is a good friend who also did a great job on this one.

How did you hook up with the Hip House legend Tyree Cooper?

Well, he played for us in Luxembourg, I told him about the release and that I was looking for another remixer so he proposed.

What’s the most essential piece of studio kit to Riven’s sound?

I d´say it´s my MFB Tanzbär, absolutely love this little box.

Who would you like to make track with?

Jamie Jones or Metodi Hristov.

Do you prefer DJing in clubs or making new productions in the studio?

I really like both.

Your one of the owners of Lauter Unfug, what’s your role with the label?

I do everything press, social media, tech, communication and design- related.

You’ve released tracks on quite few labels from Panaché Music, Cubism, Habitat Music, My Favouritie Freaks, as well as your own label, what’s your personal favourite production to date?

My personal favorite production till now actually is Acid Break.

What’s been your favourite club / festival gig of the Summer so far?

My favorite gig this summer was at the dawn to dawn festival. A small rave organised in Germany with only 500 people. It was really perfect, the vibes, the people…

Every DJ has a memorable gig story to tell, be it a nightmare gig, a funny incident or a giant mistake mid set. What’s  yours?

Haha, all my gigs are bit funny, especially with the Lauter Unfug Crew.

A birdy tells us Lauter Unfug will be at ADE this year, where is it and who can we see playing?

Yes! We´re gonna have a showcase with Beatamines, Anja Augner, Haste Midi and many others. Unfortunately, I´ll have to pass this year because I´ll have an internship.

How important is ADE for rapidly growing labels like Lauter Unfug along with artists like Riven and what aspects are you most looking forward to?

It´s always good to be present at big events on an international Level, we´re really hyped about it. This years venue is still pretty small but a lot bigger than last year

What are your top 5 tracks right now?

  1. Music Power (Metodi Hristov) – Mendo
  2. Like it or not (Joris Voorn Remix) – Bob Moses
  3. Massive (Pablo Say Remix) – Made in Riot
  4. Humano (Hatzler Remix) – Dubfire & Oliver Huntemann
  5. Meteora – Moonwalk

Tell us something about Riven that nobody knows?

I have an alter ego that only plays disco house.

Finally what’s coming next from Riven?

Oh, I’ve got some nice releases ahead on House Jackin and one big one in December on Lauter Unfug, together with Bunte Bummler and Channel X, really looking forward to that one.
