Kings Of Tomorrow bringing us the anthem of today

Interview : Dan Prince

Welcome back to DMCWORLD Sandy – and what a way to return with one of the songs of the year – Kings of Tomorrow ‘Fall For You’ featuring the wondrous April Morgan. “I feel my heart beating, his eyes are beaming, it’s got me in a sense of…serenity’. When did you write what is surely destined to be yet another modern day classic and how long did it take?

“I prepared the track beforehand, but April never spent anytime with it. It was at 10am when we got around to start and it took a whole day to get the verses down. At first we had a mic that was holding her voice back, so I changed it to a Neumann and it was perfect. We had no hook yet and I did not want something typical. We started to sing out ideas and I threw something out and she added to it. We laid the idea down and we both really loved it. We knew we had to make something better and from the response it looks like we did.”

The video was shot in Tallin, the capital of Estonia. Who was behind the art direction of this beautiful film?

“I invited April to do a performance at the Prive Club and thought it would be a good idea to film a video. I studied filming for two years on YouTube. I bought cameras and plenty of lenses. I also have a Glidecam. I filmed it and edited it and then passed what I did over Maik at Defected and he finished it with a few more edits and efx.”

I have been reading some reviews of the record, one journalist who shall remain nameless admitted he had the record on repeat all weekend, crying, laughing and reminiscing with his partner. You must have heard similar reactions to the record, you really have created a dancefloor love song…

“That’s really sweet. Some songs can strike a chord. I have done the same thing also. It’s a personal song.”

Had you Ibiza in mind when writing this record, it’s set to be one of the tunes of the summer on the white isle…?

“No thoughts of Ibiza, but it does have a nice summer tone to it. It would extra nice if it becomes the soulful tune of the summer.”

Loved the cheeky photo shoot by your wife showing the song’s lyrics. What was her first reaction to the record when you played it her?

“I like taking pictures and thought that would be fun to do. When my wife first heard the song. She said play it again and then she said wow that’s good, you and April have something special when you work together.”

Last weekend saw you make the long trek to Indonesia to play alongside Barbara Tucker singing her heart out. How was that trip?

“Jakarta is always a lot fun. My gosh they have the club called Stadium. Being with Barbara is always a joy. I remember before producing seeing her perform in NYC and being memorised. At the soundcheck I was playing “Fall For You”. She said she heard it on a boat party and asked who it was. I had a moment watching her sing my song.”

It’s been a busy few months for you in the studio, swinging our way next is ‘It’s Gonna Be Alright’, talk us through the track…

“I am lucky to still have an archive of vocals I never used. These vocals I did in 2001 and never released  it. I am on mission to release everything I have ever done…”

Your label Blackwiz is 20 years young this year – what are the big birthday plans?

“It’s just a great time to release music. I started with Rae “Baby I Want You”, “Lost 4 Days”. The tunes I drop on Blackwiz will be straight up house the way it used to do it and just have doing also. At a certain point on my career it all became top tunes and the fun for creating just got lost.”

Looking back at the last two decades, pick us some of your favourite releases you have brought us from Blackwiz…

“Fade To Black”, “I’m So Grateful”, “Flutes”, “Abstract Collage”, “Ego Trip”, “Open Your Mind”…

Where can we catch you in Ibiza this summer?

“For Defected at Bomba.”

What is the next plan studio wise for April Morgan and yourself?

“I already sent her the new tune and Defected love it. We are scheduling April to come to the studio soon. After this next tune we will focus on an album with our history and 3 new songs. Can’t wait. This new tune is great, cause its something she has never done before.  The hook is very simple and memorable.”

Where have been some of the great clubs you have rocked over the last few months?

“I was in Naples a few months and that was great. The energy  from the crowd was amazing and it was just good old school style house, Jackin, Acid. Just before I got on the DJ was playing MAW “Bounce” it was a great pace for the rest of the night.”

And finally, you must be loving the way house music is doing so well again, everyone is loving a vocal again, everyone is back on the house tip…?

“Absolutely. So many good producers and remixers are so much better these days. Technology has made thing easy for a lot of people to make good records. House has never stopped flourishing and real house was always being played in clubs. Just more people are feeling it more these days.”
