Shiftee’s Picks

Boom! Two times DMC World Champion brings us his essential weekend tunes and his weekend wherabouts

What did I do last weekend?

…I had a bit of crazy one this past weekend, so crazy that my weekend didn’t end until Wednesday!  First, I did a West Coast trip: Denver, LA, & San Francisco.
– DENVER: First I judged and showcased at the DMC at Casselman’s on Friday.  Congrats to Cocheze who took home the title.  Then on Sunday, I played with the heavy hitter Cookie Monsta at The Ogden Theater.  Peep footage from the night here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD8ya6IgLaQ
– LA: I played the prestigious SMOG SUNDAYS party at Dim Mak Studios w/ The Juggernaut, Anna Love, Tea Long, & Kemst.  Peep photos from the event here: http://www.ohdagyo.com/smog-sundays-w-shiftee-and-the-juggernaut-51312/
– SAN FRAN: Tuesday, I got down with the folks at Soundpieces & FootwerkSF at Som Bar.  Great, forward thinking music all night long.  Just got back to NYC, phew!

My new single also dropped this weekend: Rx & Shiftee – Act Out!, out now on the new label Hot Mom USA.  Needless to say, this release dropped on Mother’s Day.  Buy it here…

The Picks

Addison Groove – Bad Things ft. Spank Rock [50 Weapons]
Addison Groove chops up Spank Rock vocals to a create a thorough exposition on bad things, which will qualify as inappropriate for everyone from your grandmother to your tattoo artist/knife supplier/milk in a dirty glass bartender.  Only play this song if you wanted to see utter filthiness before your soon-to-be scarred eyes.  Out now.

Distal  – Not Cool [Tectonic]
Distal’s new album Civilation on Tectonic is fantastic.  Futuristic yet gangster.  It’s like taking Ice Cube circa Friday and placing him in space.  There are so many winners on this album, it’s hard to pick just one.  After consulting Ms. Cleo, I settled on Not Cool.  “Ima take care of my business.”  Out now.

DNAEBeats – Death Comes Young [Seclusiasis]
Another stellar & diverse album here, this one from DNAEBeats.  Styles on styles on styles.  Juke, weirdo electronica, melodic downtempo, midtempo bass heaters, soulful future house joints, and 808 bangers all collide.  Once again a “tough to pick just one” situation, but I asked myself, what would Woody Allen pick?  Out now.

Flosstradamus – From The Back ft. Danny Brown (Lunice Remix) [Fools Gold]
One of my favorite newer rappers (Danny Brown) meets one of my favorite newer producers (Lunice) remixing the trap men of the moment (Flosstradamus).  I really dig the way Lunice incorporates Danny’s vocals in this remix.  We don’t get full verses, but we do get key lines and dirty beat work.  Out now.

Krueger – This Is Sick [Paradisiaca]
I’m really feeling Krueger’s 40oz Bounce EP.  These are heavy yet fun, head nodding yet dancey.  I’m going to go out on the limb of creative writing and say, “This Is Sick.”  Out now.

Major Lazer – Get Free ft. Amber (What So Not Remix)
Dope & surprising midtempo bass drop on this remix from What So Not.  What I like about this track is it maintains the sweetness of the original while still hitting you in the jugular.  Out now.

Manikan – For All Y’all [Seclusiasis]
This tune is crazy!  Like what the heck is going on here!?!?!?  Where am I?  Why do I remember nothing from the days before?  What do all these tattoo messages on my body mean?  Why is there a pineapple in my room?  How come pineapples are so delicious?  All intriguing questions raised by this song.  Pre-order this song along with the rest of Street Bass Anhtems Vol. 5 here –   http://www.seclusiasis.com/street-bass-anthems-5-usb-flash-drive-wristband/

P Jam – The Night Club [Beatcamp]
P Jam is killing it, yo.  From Arizona Skyz to his work with Shystie to this epic banger of a dubstep tune, P Jam is a man to watch.  Here he flips that “Rhythm of The Night” song to great delight for young and old.   Forthcoming.

Rx & Shiftee – Act Out! [Hot Mom USA]
“Only act out because I want your love.”  This song is for everyone who ever acted a fool to gain attention.  In the end, we all just want to be loved.  And if driving a monster truck wearing nothing but a beer guzzling hat and then crashing into a Howard Johnson Motel is what it takes, so be it.  For fans of guns, girls, and gatorz.  Out now on the brand new label Hot Mom USA.  Buy it here:  http://www.beatport.com/release/act-out!/904891

Sarantis – Cell33 [Loose Squares]
Gully, strangeman footwork stylings from Sarantis here.  I love when the harsh, yet not overbearing, midrange baseline midway through the song.  This is some mission through the desert prison break music.  Next time you need to exact revenge on someone, make this soundtrack.  (DISCLAIMER: Shiftee does not endorse revenge, although would like to note it is a dish best served cold.)
