Simon de Jano

The on fire producer from Italy takes back to the future with summer anthem numero uno

Interview : Dan Prince

Simon welcome to DMCWORLD, where on planet dance are you today?

“Hello guys! Thank you! I’m in Italy.”

Well what can we say, you have done it again with your music! ‘Delorean’ – many DJs biggest record of the weekend…talk us through the sound and the history of this beautiful tune you have created with your friend Bottai…

“One afternoon a year ago I wrote a chords progression that seemed really strong. At that time I was often with Bottai because we worked for the same label, I really liked the music he did. I asked him if he wanted to do a collaboration and in a short time he made that crazy drop.”

And what a perfect video…you must have loved seeing the final cut…?

“I have lost count how many times I’ve seen Back to the Future – I think it must be over 50, so yes, I loved the video!”

Watch the video here :

In the film Back To The Future II, Marty and Doc zip into the future to 2015, a year now only 8 months away. When you saw the film did you think that things like hoverboards would actually exist in years to come?

“Sure, I was convinced that they would have existed. For a while there was a film on Facebook posted by somebody showing that these hoverboards really existed. Unfortunately it was a fake!”

When I told the Buzz Chart crew that I was interviewing you today they shouted out…”Eric Prydz watch out!”…thoughts on that little comment?

“Ah!!! Do not over do it guys! He is the MASTER! For 10 years he has been my favorite artist, he has given so much to music and is one of the few that continues to have his own recognizable style and make a real difference. I followed him live via streaming at Ultra in Miami a few weeks ago – a monster!”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning…

Eric Prydz – Liberate

Arno Cost & Norman Doray – Apocalypse ( Kryder & Tom Staar remix)

Leonardo Oldenburg – The Road to Nowhere

Ilan Bluestone – Spheres

Grum – In Love

Morten – Perfect Dive

Andrew Bayer – Once Lydian

Third Party – Evey Day of my Life

Merk & Kremont – Amen

Walden – Toranian

Okay lets rewind for a moment. You graduated from the Conservatory of Milan with the highest grades before making a name for yourself on the worldwide dance music stage. At what age did you first develop a love for music and how…?

“I started playing the piano when I was five years old after I had listened to a Rockets cassette for an entire summer!”

Who were the early dance music stars that first grabbed your attention?

“Giorgio Moroder and Daft Punk.”

Nice! Who are the producers from around the world you are giving high fives to at the moment though?

“Eric Prydz, Kryder, Grum, Mat Zo and Axwell.”

What is coming out from you next studio wise?

“I have a few tracks coming out, all in a different style to Delorean. Watch this space!”

Best piece of advice you can give to young and up coming producers wanting to follow in your footsteps…

“Guys do what you like and do not be influenced by fashion. Be overly critical…”

What do you think has been your best piece of production to date?

“Surely Delorean – because I’m finally able to make a track with the sounds that I wanted which are not affected by the label.”

Tell us about your studio set up?

“Windows 7 + Cubase 7 + Uad Apollo + Yamaha ns10.”

What is the last record you have heard today?

“Arno Cost & Norman Doray – Strong.”

What is your solution for writers block?

“The only solution for me is to get away from the computer for a week.”

Who is your best friend in the music industry?

“Matteo Colomovie. He is a videomaker (the same guy who edited the video for Delorean). I’ve known him for years and we have a big understanding between each other.”

What is the strangest request you have ever had from a fan?

“Are DMCWorld readers over 18??? Hahahaha!”

Great answer! Where have been some of the stand out gigs in recent months for you?

“Amnesia Ibizia last summer was a thrill for me. Up until last year I had only gone to the island as a spectator to listen to the biggest DJs in the world at the best clubs!”

Away from dance music, who are some of the artists you are listening to right now?

“I don’t listen to many recent artists to be honest Dan.. I like the Empire Of The Sun, The Presets.. but I prefer to listen the old 70s funky music and the 80s disco sounds…”

And finally, gotta ask. Have you ever DJ’d without your sunglasses on???!!?

“Haha! Since 2010 I have always played with his glasses.  There is too much light in these discos. Lol.”

Thank you dude!

“Thanks Dan, thanks DMCWorld Magazine!”
